Question about 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

My 2004 santa fe starts up but then dies, ran fine all day yesterday and this morning did this...lights come on so battery is ok.....fuel pump should be ok if it the car starts.....Ive read some horror stories online already and Iam not a mechanic so Iam guessing I need to take it in for service so my biggest question is how do you know what you should spend to fix it.....to have it towed its going to cost me over $200.00 and then the diagnostic is going to cost another $100.00.....figures I finally finish paying for the car last year and here comes the repairs so maybe its true you should trade your car in after 3 years cuz your always going to have car payments of some kind.....Thx for any information.

The best kind of car is the paid-for kind...brand has very little to do with it these days. There are all kinds of things that can cause your vehicle to start and die. A MAP Sensor could cause it. I have even seen bad ignition switches cause similar symptoms. Nobody can tell you how much it is going to cost or how much you can "expect to spend" until you find out what is causing it...that's what the diagnostics is for. As far as trading the vehicle in???...All I can say about that is that I can't figure the math that most people use. I have had customers tell me that they cannot afford a vehicle any longer because they had to spend $2000 dollars in the last year on repairs. Then they turn around and jump into a $450/Month car payment???? How is it they can afford $5400/year in car payments, but cannot afford $2000/year in repairs to keep their old car in good running condition? My computer just does not work that way...I don't get it.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe and it keeps dieing on me. The starter, battery and alternator are all fine, what is the problem?

You didn't tell us under which conditions it is dying while at a steady speed, at an idle, when cold or warm, etc. Knowing those would help narrow the cause.
At a guess, I would be looking at the coil pack, idle air control or a failing fuel pump.
