Question about 2006 Ford Focus
The PCM is the computer that determines all the parameters of the engine and the transmission. If it's defective it must be replaced - it's a sealed device that should not be opened for repairs: it can be opened but this is an extremely bad decision since this can do way more damage than it can fix. The dealer should have a specialized tester to determine if it's faulty - unfortunately this is a very common defect so yes, almost surely this is also your case.
A new PCM costs around £50 when purchased from a parts dealer, less than £35 when you get it from a scrap yard. To that you must add another £100 for the install and the programming/pairing it to the car.
