Quite common for the air cond to switch on usually after key movements. The main problem really is the squealing belt.Check this belt for wear and looseness. There should only be 6-8mm of belt deflection between two pulleys.Adjustment by loosening the idler pulley that runs against the belt and tightening the long bolt behind it(from memory)or it will have a similar type of set up.
If the belt has any perishing or cracks, especially on the ribs inside the belt, replace it.
I hope this helps

If your running defrost, it"s normal for that to happen. The compressor will kick in and out as an aid to removing moisture, thus defrosting faster and better. When in heat mode, it shouldn't come on and off.
Belt squealing likely caused by worn or loose belt. I would inspect it, or have it inspected and check and adjust tension if belt looks o.k. I believe you have an adjustable tensioner on that vehicle, which will allow for tightening of the belt tension.

Ur belt is squealing because it's trying to catch up when ur compressor is kicking in and putting a load on it try tightening the belt,if this becomes a major problem pull the fuse

My car makes a loud squealing sound when i start it

Mary,

This type of problem is best checked by a trusted mechanic. I doubt you'd hear squealing noises from the crankshaft or harmonic balancer; but it is likely to be heard from a belt tensioner pulley, water pump (or other belt-driven devices under the hood - such as the alternator, power steering pump, etc.). A loose or slipping belt can also cause this noise.

Spraying WD-40 on the source of the squeal may quiet the sound - but not solve the problem that is causing it. By simply masking the problem with WD-40 instead of fixing it - you run the risk of the squealing part failing catastrophically - probably at the least desirable place and time.

For your own safety and convenience, have this problem checked and repaired properly.

Good luck!

How can I figure out what's squealing? Where can I find belt diagrams?

I had something similar with two seperate vehicles after replacing everything I could think of it turned out to be a bad bearing in my alternator on both vehicles.

find the pulley with the failing bearings and you may get more power when you fix it. The belt squeal is low tension or wrong belt section The belt should be just above the pulley flange and if it is not then it will be running on the bottom of the pulley and that is why it is squealing.

I have a loud squealing noise upon starting the car. the squealing normally lasts about 30-45 seconds. sometimes the noise will appear aftrer pulling off from a stopped position, as well. all belts

Try to tighten the belts a little firm.Sounds like when engine idling no squelling only when about to take off .Some times belts may seem ok on the outside but if you look on inner side you tend to see cracks in the belts .

Can't find the source of the squeal

Year make and model ??
The belt could be glazed and slipping even if it is tight.
You could have a weak belt tensioner too.
The noise when the ac or heat is turned on can be the extra load from the ac compressor or the alternator. The compressor cycles on and off especially in defrost mode.
The load from the alternator is the first noise of the day. As the belt warms up it becomes better at handling the load of the accessories.
Even tho the belt looks fine, you may have to replace it to get rid of the noise.

AnWhat causes a loud squealing sound when I start the engine and/ or turn on the defroster?

will try to assist you. the loud squealing is most likely a belt thats loose. when you start the engine it squeals for what?30seconds? when you turn the heater on it puts a drag of power from your engine and the engine is trying to compensate. so it [engine] asks for power, puts drain on engine and the loose belt squeals.a loose belt will squeal, simply because it's trying to do it's job.but loosing traction. so it squeals. check for play in belts with engine off of course. grab each belt by hand. if it has more than1/4 inch play or [slack] it needs adjustment,or replacement. hope this helps! thank you for choosing fixya.com we are here for you 24/7 7days per week! good luck!!

A/c squeal

Have the belt tensioner checked, it might have a weak spring keeping the belt from having the right tension on the pulleys.

Just replaced belt and alternator. Engine squeals very loud when started. What should I check next? belt tension seems good.

Sounds like the new alternator was run without first fully charging the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volts)
This will destroy an alternator every time -- the classic symptom is a squealing belt.
