Hi, what's happened is your interlock switch has come loose or is busted. The switch is on the side of the transmission. First check the adjustment. If it's wrong, try adjusting. If this doesn't work, replace the switch. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

ADJUSTMENT
Hi, I have a 1996 - jturcotte_388.jpg

  1. Loosen the neutral start switch bolt.
  2. Place the gearshift selector lever in the N position.
  3. Align the shaft groove of the switch with the neutral Basic line. Hold the switch in this position and tighten the switch bolts on the A43D to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and all others to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  4. With the parking brake set and the brake pedal fully applied, attempt to start the engine in each shifter range. The engine should only start in N or P .

This fault is caused by the inhibitor switch being misaligned or out of adjustment. It usually is on the side of the trans where the linkage cable or rod bolts to the trans lever.Check underneath the truck. Most Toyota trans are held up in place by a mount that breaks and drops the trans down sufficiently to possibly cause the above.replace the mount,and/or the damaged inhibitor switch.
It could even be wear in the linkages from shifter to transmission, check these also while someone runs the shifter through range(with the engine off and the handbrake firmly applied.
I hope this helps,or get back to me with any findings.

!996 Toyota corolla, starts up ok but when put on reverse or drive, won't move even when pushed

Check the gear lever connection with the gearbox.
Check the gearbox oil level and colour. Replace if necessary.

Car only starts in reverse and only drives in neutral

Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.

We just over hauled my 1997 Nissan pickup 4wd. It won't start and run on it's own? What diagnostic tool do I need to tell me the problem?

All 1996 North American vehicles (U.S.) and later are required to be compatible with an OBD-II scanner that you can purchase for about $100. Various brands are available. However, if it won't actually start, and run on its own, there may not be any codes stored in the computer that will be of use.

Hi jorl..... You need to call an autoelectric repair shop, get in and get that car on their scanner. There is no other way to find out what is going on. Joe
