You need a tune-up to start with. when was the last time it was done.
1. check for vacuum leaks
2. check chock and any linkage.
3. clean and /or ajust card./throttle body
4. replace spark plugs. and check spark plug wires. and check coils
5. replace air filter and fuel filter.
6. change oil and filter if you haven't, just because.
-- Is it running better now? --
-- are you using good gas? --
7. clean or replace fuel injectors.

When in gear and a/c is turned on, wants to stall

run the fault codes and check for problem idle control sensor
500 rpms are too slow for idle should be around 850 for automatic
also have the voltage regulator /alternator checked as the problem is not enough voltage ti run the car and the ac because the available voltage isn't high enough

Just recently the idle speed is about 1200 rpm and after warmed up and sitting at a stop sign or in a parking lot in Park, it drops down to 800 rpm and occasionally drops even lower wanting to stall. Can...

Hello, most of the modern vehicles are Factory set. There are only slight changes that can be made, but your problem is the idle is all over the place. The Cold Start Routine is working correctly when the idle is faster for a cold engine and then drops down after 2 minutes or less.

Check your sensor in the Air Intake and clean it with Electronics cleaner. Then check the Intake manifold for Vacuum leaks with a spray bottle of water or approved choke cleaner. When the engine is running spray around the Intake seams and Vacuum lines and Solenoids with Vacuum fittings. The RPM will change when you find the leak. Then fix the leak.

The Idle control motor (Solenoid) is on some vehicles and mounted below the Airhorn. It may just be dirty and after it is removed from the Intake, may be cleaned with WD40. This part will cause the symptoms you mentioned, but depending on what your vehicle is, can take 2 hours to work on.

Thanks for using Fixya.

1991 Chevy Caprice has a mild miss fire and stall at low rpm: This is my latest update: I checked and cleaned the EGR,PCV,IAC valve, M.A.P sensor and Throttle body(bore/butterfly). with carb cleaner....

Do you have the idle speed turned up to keep it from dying? Because it is high. Check engine light on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks at the gasket under the throttle body? How does the car run under acceleration? You might have a worn distributor shaft.

Engine stalling after starting and stopping

Does that mean it does not stall or **** in 3rd gear?
The difference between low RPM and high RPM is primarily a greater fuel requirement. So a fuel related problem like clogged filter or bad fuel pump or return pressure regulator comes to mind.
Spark is also slightly RPM related, so you could have the ignition control module checked at Autozone or a place like that.
Other RPM related items, such as EGR, PVC, and tank purge valve are not likely to be so dramatic alone.

1996 Mercury Mystique 2.0L stalling

Drive it to Autozone or similar place and ask them to scan the car because the "check engine light is on". Most likely it will be a TPS switch. In area of $30 for part. It takes about 20 minutes to do. Most of time spent getting to part. But see what scan shows.

When i activate the air condition the engine meter, goes up and down.

The "Tachometer" is the gauge that indicates the engine RPM. It is not unusual for the idling RPM to drop slightly when the air conditioner comes on. The air conditioner represents a fairly large load on the engine so when it starts, the RPM will drop slightly. When driving, you'll probably not even notice that the air conditioning is a load on the engine unless you're accelerating uphill, pulling a trailer or passing another vehicle while the vehicle is fully loaded. At idle, the Envoy's computer should detect the falling RPM and make adjustments in fuel delivery to bring the RPM back up.

In any case, it shouldn't be cause for alarm, unless the air conditioner is stalling the engine. If this is the case, you are probably in need of service. The issue of low cooling from the air conditioner while idling in gear (as is the case when stopped in traffic, etc.) is correctable free of charge at the dealership on certain vehicles as a result of a recall. Your dealer can tell you if your vehicle is affected or if there is other recall work pending on your vehicle based on the VIN.

I hope this helps!

I have a 91 shadow and had a similar problem. Mine is fuel injected, and the quick fix was to just go buy some fuel injector cleaner, I reccomend STP, and throw that in the gas tank every fill up for about a month. Mine hasn't had the problem since.
