Question about 2001 Saturn L-Series

2 Answers

2003 Saturn L200 (153,000 miles) 1. Gas gauge occasionally fluctuates between empty and full while driving for no apparent reason at the same time the car alarm light flashes. 2. Sitting at a light idling, put car in park and car alarm went off, could not get it out of park (no, I did not accidentally hit the alarm, yes I tried to shut off the alarm). 1 hour later (after towed) put it in drive, no problems except odometer jumped from 153,000 to 910,000 miles. 3. Went from 20+ mpg city down to 8 mpg city. No smell of gas leaking. Any help would be appreciated. I have had this car for 5+ years and this is the first time I have had any major problems outside of normal break wear!

Take it to Oreilly and have them test your battery might want to have them check the alternator as well. I had similar problems and apperantly my battery was good enough to start the car, but not to maintain all the fancy electronics

Wow, that's amazing....I do know the newer (third generation) 'L' have a body computer, it sounds like your's has gone loco. the security system and the horrible gas mileage also might be some major issue with the electrical system, specifically the alternator-check voltage while parked and not running (should be 12.5+), and running it should be close to 15 when started, and settle down to around 14 after a minute or 2.

Could be many things, but fuel pressure regulator, leaking injectors are most likely. DO NOT DRIVE UNTIL FIXED. If the fuel is really getting into the oil pan, oil will be diluted and could damage engine bearings.

How much fuel is left when the low fuel light comes on

It varies for every car. Usually 1-1.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. I drove my last '93 Ford Taurus around until the gauge said it was empty. Lifted the car and took the gas tank off and it had 3 or more gallons still in it. Here's some fun, zero your odometer, fill the gas tank and drive it until the low fuel light comes on. Then drive it till it dies out, obviously somewhere near home or where someone can drop off a full gas can.

Why fuel gauge not working gas guage on 2009 santa fe stays on empty even with a full tank of gas. Guage fluctuates from empty to 3/4 full to empty to 1/3 full at any given time.

It could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash. A mechanic would test the signal coming from the sending unit to verify.

The float is sinking. This could be from alcohol used in gasoline.

Dual gas tanks, and one registers on the gauge and now the other registers empty. This just started to happen and for no apparent reason. Is there a simple fix or where should I start ?

If it reads empty, you probably have a short in the sender wiring to the tank, or the sender is bad. If you disconnect the electrical connector to the gauge near the tank, the gauge should then read full. You can then test the electrical resistance of the sender with the tank full and with it empty.

2003 Impala fuel gauge used to bounce and now stays at full. When tank is empty, gauge shows 1/2-3/4 full. How to fix?

most of the time this is simply just the float in the gas tank getting stuck had the same problem in my car. unfortunately you have to access the gas tank to fix, but it is an easy fix. hope this helps any questions let me know.

Gas gauge flucuates to empty and full so we never know if we have enough gas. What to do?

It is a common problem. It is a faulty in tank sender. You can just replace the sending unit by removing tank.
