There are three different transfer case's ! Which of these does your olds have ?

Transfer Case - NVG 136-NP4 (One Speed Automatic)
Transfer Case - NVG 233-NP1 (Two Speed Selectable)
Transfer Case - NVG 236 (Two Speed Automatic)

All three have an electronic control module ! When the light is on DTC'S are stored in the transfer case shift control module .

SERVICE indicator (AWD/4WD) lamp
The SERVICE indicator (AWD/4WD) lamp is an integral part of the instrument cluster and cannot be serviced separately. This lamp is used to inform the driver of the vehicle of malfunctions within the automatic transfer case (ATC) system. The SERVICE indicator (AWD/4WD) lamp is controlled by the transfer case shift control module via a Class 2 serial data message.

There are three speed sensors on the Automatic Transfer Case (ATC), two on the rear output shaft and one on the front output shaft. Each speed sensor is a Permanent Magnet (PM) generator. The PM generator produces a pulsing AC voltage. The AC voltage level and number of pulses increases as speed increases.
Vehicle Speed Sensor
One of the two speed sensors on the rear output shaft is the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It is an input to the vehicle control module (VCM). The VCM sends this information to the transfer case shift control module via the Class 2 Serial Data bus.
Rear Propshaft Speed Sensor
The transfer case shift control module converts the pulsating AC voltage from the rear propshaft speed sensor to a Rear Propshaft Speed in RPMs to be used for calculations. The Rear Propshaft Speed can be displayed with a scan tool.
Front Propshaft Speed Sensor
The transfer case shift control module converts the pulsating AC voltage from the front propshaft speed sensor to Front Propshaft Speed in RPM to be used for calculations, and to monitor the difference between the front and rear propshaft sensor speed. It is also used in the AUTO 4WD mode of operation to determine the amount of slip and the percent of torque to apply to the front axle. The Front Propshaft Speed can be displayed with a scan tool.

Transfer Case Encoder Motor
The transfer case encoder motor is a permanent magnet D.C. motor and gear reduction assembly. The encoder motor is controlled with a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal provided by the transfer case shift control module. It is located on the left hand side (drivers side) of the transfer case. When activated it turns the sector shaft of the transfer case to shift the transfer case. This circuit consists of a power supply relay (Motor Feed A circuit ) that supplies voltage to the motor. The Motor Control B circuit is a PWM driver that varies the duty cycle to control the amount of current through the motor to ground.

You don't want to just start replacing parts , that could cost $$$$$$ . You could check connections at all the sensors an the control module , but other then that ,well . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop .

The NV236 transfer case is an automatic transfer case with three drive ranges. Shifting from rear wheel drive to four wheel drive is done automatically when the transfer case shift control module receives wheel rotating slip information from the speed sensors. The transfer case shift control module then engages the transfer case motor/encoder to position the transfer case from rear to four wheel drive. When the transfer case shift control module receives information that the wheel rotation is the same on both axles, the transfer case shift control module sends position information to the motor/encoder to put the transfer case back into rear wheel drive. The three drive ranges are 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. The 2HI position is for normal driving with the rear wheels pushing the vehicle. The 4HI, position is for driving through sand, snow, mud, gravel, or heavy rain at normal or slightly below normal speeds. The 4HI engages the front axle to allow for four wheel drive. The front axle is pulling the vehicle, and the rear axle is pushing the vehicle. The 4LO range is used for off road driving, heavy snow, deep mud, or shallow fording. The 4LO is similar to the 4HI except that the gearing in the transfer case is set for low speed and high torque. The NV236 is manufactured at Syracuse New York by New Venture Gear a division of New Process Gear for General Motors.

How to Remove a Chevy Blazer Rear Transfer Case The transfer case on a Chevrolet Blazer is underneath the vehicle, mounted to the rear of the transmission. On four-wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case takes power generated by the engine and channeled through the transmission and directs it to the front and rear drive axles. Over time, the gears and bearings inside the transfer case can wear and the transfer case must be rebuilt. The transfer case on this vehicle must be removed before it can be serviced.
Things You'll Need
  • Wrench set
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Needle-nose pliers

  1. Removing the Driveshafts
    • 1 Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the terminal.
  • 2 Raise the vehicle and support with jack stands placed underneath the frame.
  • 3 Drain the transfer case. Locate the drain plug near the bottom of the transfer case. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the plug and use a socket to remove it. Once all the fluid has drained out, reinstall the plug.
  • 4 Remove the bolts that connect the rear driveshaft to the rear axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it backward underneath the rear axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove it from the vehicle.
  • 5 Remove the bolts that connect the front driveshaft to the front axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it forward underneath the front axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
  • Removing the Transfer Case
    • 6 Label and disconnect the electrical wires and vacuum lines connected to the transfer case. Use masking tape and a marker.
    • 7 Remove the transfer case shifter rod. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the clip that connects the shifter rod to the transfer case. Slide the rod away from the transfer case.
    • 8 Position a floor jack underneath the transfer case. Raise it enough to take the weight of the transfer case off the transmission.
    • 9 Remove the bolts that connect the transfer case to the transmission using a socket or wrench.
    • 10 Slide the transfer case rearward to disengage it from the transfer case. Lower the floor jack, and remove the transfer case from the vehicle

    Is doing a transmission flush the same as changing the differntial fluid?


    No, a transmission flush replaces the fluid in your transmission. A diff. service would replace the fluid in the rear end also the transfer case and front diff. if you have a 4 wheel drive truck.

    best bet is junkyard replacement. worst case. remove tc and get a longer driveshaft to the rear end

    I have a subaru 1987 GL sedan, I can select when to put it in 4wd. it has 185/70r13 tires on it, when i bought the car, it had two 175/70r13 tires in the trunk. Can I use those in combination with the...


    Never mix tire sizes on a 4WD or AWD car or truck. It will damage the center differntial or transfer case because the front and rear will be going at slightly different speeds.
    There is SOME room for difference depending on the type of differential it has, but in general the long term effect is damaging.

    Standard differential gear API GL-5, viscosity SAE 80W-90 Limited-slip differential (LSD) gear; Use only LSD gear oil API GL-5 and SAE 80W-90
    if you meant front differntial
    Transmission Fluid Dexron III, Mercon or API GL-4 viscosity SAE 75W-90
    if you meant transfer case

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
    The catalytic converter is located beside the transfer case. Be careful when working around the catalytic converter because of the extremely high temperatures generated by the converter.
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
    3. If so equipped, remove the skid plate from frame.
    4. Drain the transfer case.
    5. Remove the damper from the transfer case, if so equipped.
    6. On electronic shift models, remove the wire connector from the feed wire harness at the rear of the transfer case. Be sure to squeeze the locking tabs, then pull the connectors apart.
    7. Disconnect the front driveshaft from the axle input yoke.
    8. If equipped, loosen the clamp retaining the front driveshaft boot to the transfer case, and pull the driveshaft and front boot assembly out of the transfer case front output shaft.
    9. Disconnect the rear driveshaft from the transfer case output shaft yoke.
    10. If equipped, disconnect the speedometer driven gear from the transfer case rear cover.
    11. If equipped, disconnect the electrical wire harness plug from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
    12. Disconnect the vent hose from the mounting bracket.
    13. On manual shift models, perform the following:
      1. Remove the shift lever retaining nut and remove the lever.
      2. Remove the bolts that retains the shifter to the extension housing. Note the size and location of the bolts to aid during installation. Remove the lever assembly and bushing.
    14. If equipped, remove the heat shield from the transfer case.
    15. Support the transfer case with a transmission jack.
    16. Remove the mounting bolts retaining the transfer case to the transmission.
    17. Slide the transfer case rearward off the transmission output shaft and lower the transfer case from the vehicle. Remove the gasket or any old sealer from between the transfer case and the transmission.

    It sounds like you may have vacuum problem. There are several places you need to check. FIrst check the vacuum line from the engine to the tranfer case. Then check the vacuum lines from the transfer case to the front differntial. If all lines check good, there is a vacuum swith on the top of the transfer case that may be the cuase of your problem.
