I have a 1999 Ford Expedition and the odometer/trip meter comes on and off when it wants. The dealer shis said I needed a new "board" and it would cost about $850, I told them to pack sand, that I heard that other people were having the same issues. It is a manufacturing defect, but until it kills someone, they won't do anything about it.

Could be a possible ground issue on the board, causing the light to go out,
Not sure how to explain a testing procedure. You will need the scymatics of the gauge clusterm and to locate the ground wire and test for resistance.

50-50 chance that its a connection problem via- ground or power
50-50 chance the board is loosing its strength to pass a charge.= 850$ new from dealer

if you can locate a used one via ebay.com or any other web site, mabye a local car junk yard do so.

Town country fuel odometer

When you fill up make sure that the car engine is stopped and keys are out of ignition, only stopping the engine but leaving the contact on or on accessories position will interfere with the car computer calculating the mileage base on the amount of fuel you pump.

My 2003 ford focus speedometer stops working sometimes as does the elecyric odometer- sometimes both at same time. Other gauges work fine. The odometer goes to just dashes in place of the actual mileage...

Usually if both the odometer and speedometer stop working, the problem is the speed sensor on the transmission. You should also have a trouble code in the engine computer.
If one component works but the other does not, the problem is usually the speedometer head in the dash.

Service required light flashes 5 times even when the other lights

It looks like your Oil Changhe Reminder needs reset... I get many calls a week for this procedure...
This is really easy! Follow these directions:

Turn the key ON

Look at the odometer, and verify that it displays "ODO" and the total mileage traveled. If it is on "Trip A" or "Trip B", press the black stick next to the odometer to read "ODO", and the total miles traveled.

Turn the key OFF.

Press in, and HOLD the black trip meter reset button, hold it in.
DO not release it.

Turn the key ON

Observe the Odometer display. The total mileage traveled will disappear, and you will see 5 dashes, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 dash, and finally, 5 zeros. Then, the total mileage traveled will redisplay.

Release the black trip meter reset stick.

This completes the reset procedure, and it will be back on in 5,000 miles, to remind you of you next oil change.

Hope this helps!
This is an addition to the reset procedure, I apologize for not mentioning it:

You do NOT START the vehicle at any time during the reset procedure.
If the engine starts, the procedure will not reset.

If you do NOT see the dashes, followed by the 5 zeros, start the entire procedure again, but start with the odometer set to TRIP "A". Some vehicles use Trip A instead of the ODO.

You do NOT START the vehicle at any time during the reset procedure.
If the engine starts, the procedure will not reset.
