First once the car cools off I would replace the antifreeze back in the car once the car is cold again. I would refill the plastic bucket and then remove the radiator cap (dont do this unless the car is cold you could get scalded if the car is hot) look inside the radiator if its low then fill it all the way up and put the radiator cap back on and make sure its tight. Now put the car on a level surface and start it and let it run and heat up. Open up the hood to check for a bad hose upper and lower they are mounted on the top and bottom of the radiator. Look at your heater hoses to see if they are leaking. One comes off your water pump usually the other mounts at the engine block and both of them go straight back to your heater core if you find one you will find the other they mount together. Now look at the water pump itself do you see it dripping any fluid. Next get in the car on the passenger side feel the rug is it wet? If so its a bad heater core and that may cost a few hundred to replace. Next lay on the ground in front of the car and see if you see any liguid on the ground that will give you a general idea where the fluid is leaking from then you have to look closer to find the leak. You may even have a leak in the radiator itself. So look closely. While your looking make sure your fan is running to cool the radiator down and that there are no obstructions on the front of the radiator like paper or plastic or leaves this will cause you to over heat too. If you cant find the leak your self you will have to take the car to a mechanic to have the system pressure checked and they will find the leak for you but you will have to pay for that check and then for the repair. Trying to find it yourself and repairing it yourself is much cheaper.

I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for choosing Fixya and welcome to the site. You need to make sure you are not leaking coolant and make sure there is none in the oil when you change the oil. Make sure all your coolant hoses are all the way on and check the clamps to make sure they are tight, but not tight enough to cause damage. Make sure your not leaking coolant from the coolant cap. If your coolant level is correct, the coolant sensor that reads the level of the coolant may be bad. Also, make sure it is not leaking coolant around the radiator and engine. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for using Fixya and have a good day.

97 Lumina. Two weeks ago had oil change. At that time, mechanic stated that coolant was low and discolored. He flushed the system at that time. This past week,my low coolant light came on. Checked tank and...

take the spark plugs out and fill the water up. turn over the engine. see what comes out of the spark plug holes. should just be fuel. smell. you will need some one to turn the engine over and have good charge in the battery. fill the water to the top so it is level. if you see the water go down when the engine is turning. then it could be air or a leak in the head gasket.

My Chevy Malibu 1997 has a major problem with leaking in the coolant system. The coolant light comes on and stays on. We put prestone in the recovery system until its filled. The coolant light continue...

I'm guessing that the mechanic fixed a coolant leak around the gasket on the upper air plenum. The gasket leak was probably caused by Dexcool antifreeze deteriorating the gasket material. If that is the case, then the lower intake gasket is probably leaking too. If the mechanic refilled the cooling sysytem with DExcool antifreeze, then it probably destroyed the sealant he used to make the initial repair. I would have the car towed back to the mechanic to avoid any further damage from overheating. Have the mechanic remove the lower intake and check the gasket for leaks. DO NOT refill the cooling system with Dexcool. Use a compatible antifreeze that will work with aluminum engine parts.

Check coolant light on

Probably just need to add some coolant. make sure you use the correct amount of antifreeze with the cold weather coming up. and be sure the radiator is colled down before you open it. make sure to fill your resivour up to the full mark also.

You know the 97 to 04 Malibu is noted for intake manifold leaking antifreeze into the engine. A little antifreeze in a cylinder can keep the piston from moving in compression stroke. Take a look at the spark plugs, see if any of them have antifreeze on them and maybe the starter will spin the crank with the plugs out.

No heat , antifreez leak not visable...

A car this new should have a warranty right? the only other place for anti-freeze to go is through a blown headgasket into your oil. Pull out your oil dipstick and make sure it is not milky in color. If not check behind the engine and see if any coolant lines going into the firewall are leaking. When inside the car do you smell steaming coolant(anti-freeze) or hear gurgling? The temp gauge that stays on is the overheat indicator?

How much antifreeze to put in?

There should be a mark there somewhere...generally filling to 3/4 full is fine. If you overfill a bit the worst that will happen is that it will spit out the excess....better than under-filling. Also since you needed to add coolant I suggest you take a good look to make sure there aren't any leaks. Better to take care of any while they are small and not causing big problems.

Check engine light - low antifreeze

Chanses are the shop did chk. the coolant in the resavor and probly top it off but did not chk.the radiator witch was low and it drew out of resavor to fill radiator witch is the correct way to fill the radiator, just fill it back up with 50/50 (no water.) I don't think that would make the light come on, as you have a low coolant light for that. For piece of mind have it scaned to find out way the chk.engine light came on.
