Hi.

esc is short for electronic stability control.
as far as i can understand, it is a system that will transfer power to the other three wheels if one becomes "jammed" or disabled (kia's own word, not mine).

this light coming on and staying on appears to be a fairly common problem, sometimes with loss of power and other system warning lights. if this is the case, it should bbe taken for a computer diagnostic test to find where the problem lies. there have been service bulletins from kia regarding some issues with this light so it may be worth contacting them for more specific information.

ESC OFF is switch on

Yes, and press the switch and ESC will turn on. The switch enables or disables the ESC. When you turn off the vehicle and turn it back on, the ESC will automatically turn on regardless of whether it was on or off when you last turned the car off. If you want to keep the ESC disabled, you will need to push the button each time you start the car. The ESC is not the ESCape hatch. It is the Electronic Stabilization Control. This is a computer operated system of interworking devices that help keep the car stabilized and driving correctly. It includes the antilock braking system, the antiskid system and the traction control system (if equiped).

What is electronic spark control (ESC)?

Electronic Spark Control

An additional electronic control (ESC) is used on vehicles equipped with
an LE9 engine. The Electronic Spark Control (ESC) system is a closed
loop system that controls engine detonation by modifying the spark
advance when detonation occurs. The amount of retard is a function of
the degree of detonation.

Controller

The (ESC) controller processes the sensor signal and applies it to the
distributor to adjust spark timing. The process is continuous so that
the presence of detonation is monitored and controlled. The controller
is a hard wired signal processor/amplifier which operates from 6 to 16
volts. The controller has no memory storage.

Sensor

The (ESC) sensor is a piezoelectric device, mounted in the engine block
that detects the presence (or absence) and intensity of detonation by
the vibration characteristics of the engine. The output is an
electrical signal that goes to the controller. A sensor failure would
allow no retard.

ESC Vacuum Switch

On LE9 engine equipped vehicles with automatic transmission a "tip in"
vacuum switch is used. Its function is to provide a momentary contact
closure (signal) to the ESC controller during a throttle "tip in"
condition which then briefly retards spark timing to minimize knock.
The switch contacts are normally open under steady engine vacuum
conditions including no vacuum, and all brief increasing vacuum
conditions. Basically the switch closes only during rapidly decreasing
vacuum conditions such as that encountered on rapid throttle operation.

What does the ESC light on my Hyundai entourage mean? what does the acronym even stand for?

Your owner's manual says = Electronic Stability Control. Optimum driving safety now has a name : ESC, the Electronic Stability Control. ESC recognizes critical driving conditions, such as panic reactions in dangerous situations, and stabilizes the vehicle by wheel-individual braking and engine control intervention with no needfor actuating the brake or the gas pedal. ESC adds a further function known as Active Yaw Control (AYC) to the ABS, TCS, EBD and ESC functions. Whereas the ABS/TCS function controls wheel slip during braking and acceleration and, thus, mainly intervenes in the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle, active yaw control stabilizes the vehicle about its vertical axis. This is achieved by wheel individual brake intervention and adaptation of the momentary engine torque with no need for any action to be taken by the driver. ESC essentially consists of three assemblies : the sensors, the electronic control unit and the actuators. Of course, the stability control feature works under all driving and operating conditions. Under certain driving conditions, the ABS/TCS function can be activated simultaneously with the ESC function in response to a command by the driver. In the event of a failure of the stability control function, the basic safety function, ABS, is still maintained.

ESC light. What does it mean

I'm sorry to say that Michael Richardson is incorrect. ESC actually stands for Electronic Stability Control. It monitors the wheels for slippage, and will reduce power (or even apply braking, according to Kia) to a particular wheel if it detects that it has lost traction. For example, say you're driving in the rain and your front passenger wheel hits a puddle and starts to hydroplane. ESC will cut the power to that wheel so that it rolls freely until you get out of the puddle. As it's doing that your ESC light flashes. If you are driving on ice and no wheels have good traction it may stay lit and not allow you to accelerate rapidly because it can control the throttle as well. You can turn off ESC with a button on your dashboard which will result in a yellow ESC Off indicator.

If your ESC Off light is on all the time regardless of the dashboard button or weather conditions, you probably have a problem with your ESC system, which could be as simple as a faulty brake light switch. Kia should be able to diagnose it quickly.

ESC light on/Now it says ESC OFF

Electronic Stability Control (or ESC) is a new crash avoidance system found on many vehicles. Unlike air bags, which only help you during a collision, ESC will help you to avoid loss of control that could lead to a collision.
ESC is designed to help you stay in control of your vehicle during an emergency manoeuvre, such as when you need to swerve or brake suddenly to avoid an obstacle.
ESC monitors your steering versus the direction of the vehicle. When they do not match, ESC will automatically actuate the brakes at one or more wheels for short periods of time, reduce engine power, or both. If at all possible, ESC will help you maintain control of your vehicle.
ESC is automatically "ON" whenever you start your vehicle. Some vehicles have an ESC Off switch; this switch is needed to disable ESC during certain situations such as when you are stuck in snow. If your vehicle has an ESC Off switch, refer to the vehicle owner's manual for more information. Unless you manually shut ESC Off, it will remain active until you turn the engine off.
