If you live in a warm region use 10-50, if it gets cold in the winter where you live, use 20-50. I like to use synthetic oil. It seems to hold up better in any engine.

SOURCE: oil light is on

Oil pressure and oil level are 2 different things, is this the oil pressure warning light that comes on? If so then the oil pressure sensor may be bad if there is no engine noise. I would have the oil press checked with a mechanical guage though just to be safe, engines cost big $$$$

SOURCE: 2001 Dodge Stratus Transmission Problem

COULD BE LOSS OF ALL TRASMISSION FLUID, BROKEN HOSE, BLOWN PUMP,BURNT TRANSMISSION RINGS( HOW DID THE TRANNY OIL SMELL?) BURNT TRANNY FLUID OR A COMBINATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE. IF IT JUST QUIT, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL REQUIRE A REBUILD OR A SALVAGE TRANSMISSION FROM A LOCAL WRECKING YARD. THE LATTER BEING THE CHEAPEST AND AT TIMES THE BETTER DEAL ALL AROUND, TIME WISE AND MONEY. VERSUS A REBUILD THAT REQUIRES NEW PARTS, BANDS, PUMP, SEALS AND ON AND ON PLUS HOURS OF LABOR TO FIX EQUALS ONE BIG BIG BILL!BEING A 2001 A TRANNY FROM A WRECKING YARD ISN'T GOING TO HAVE THAT MANY MILES ON IT EITHER SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME PRETTY DECENT ONES. THAT'S THE ROUTE I'D GO, BUT YOU'RE FREE TO CHOOSE EITHER CHOICE. I DON'T ENDORSE OR CONDEMN EITHER ONE, JUST POINT OUT THE GOOG AND THE WEAK IN EACH FOR YOU TO DECIDE! GOOD LUCK! Are you saying there is little or no coolant?
If so has the engine system gone to shut down to save the engine?
Running an engine for more than a few seconds without coolant is asking for trouble.
Are there any engine codes showing on the dashboard?

Drain plug for transmission on a 4 cyl dodge stratus automatic 2001

I do not have a Dodge Stratus, however, I have owned more than 20 vehicles. None of them had a drain plug for the transmission. The reason for this is transmission oil is normally good for many many miles. When it is time to change it, the manufacturer wants you to remove the oil pan, clean it, change the filter and adjust the bands as may be necessary. No oil plug means you have to remove the pan + there is never a leak as a result of no plug.

Your dodge should use a 5w-30sae oil.I prefer to use a semi synthetic oil it mixes with conventional oil and provides better break down resistance.

Berk-Arnley or magnafilter oil filter is best for the Dodge Stratus. It's cheap and reliable too. This one is available on car parts retail sites or on ebay.

Weres the oil filter

On what kind of vehicle, make, year and engine? Usually you have to get under the car and look for what somewhat resembles a pop can, it should unscrew. Oil will run out!

Listed in your owner's manual. I can tell you it is not a 40 weight oil. It will either be 5w30, or 10w30. 5W-30 unless you live in the most southern states or mexico then 10W-30
