Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. Your alternator is part of the charging system. Make sure your battery is good and holding a charge. Make sure you see no fluid leaks on the battery. Make sure the terminals are cleaned and they are tight to the post. Here is how to check your alternator to see if it needs replaced. Start your vehicle and then take the hot side battery terminal off the post. If your vehicle dies instantly, your alternator is bad and will need changed. If it doesn't die instantly, recheck the battery, wires, and terminals. Make sure the alternator wires are correct, tight, and not damaged. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for using FixYa and have a good day.

Why won't the newly installed altenator work on the 2006 Ford Taurus? The cars gauges stopped working and a red icon was lit up on the dash (appeared to be the check engine light) when the car was moving....

as its a used part it may not be in working order , check the charge rate by putting volt meter across the battery terminals when engine running , the reading should be around 13.5 -14 volts , if not then check the alternator belt is tight enough and retest the charge if lower than 12 volts then the alternator is useless , a non charging alternator will give the symptoms you've described, th ered icon is the non charging warning light , dont drive if the check is low as will ruin your battery as well, take alternator off and get a lift back to the supplier , best to by new

Tip

Problems with right side gauges not working in a 1986 bmw 325.

if your rpm gauge temp gauge and your odometer stop working in your 1986 bmw 325 check the sid batteries located inside the instrument cluster. chances are those are blown up. checked mine today and they were covered in battery acid. i replaced them with new ones and everything works now. tip they need to be rechargeable batteries. The altenator recharges them as the car is on.

Got an 97 jeep wrangler the check gauge light well come on then the charging gauge quits, if u start it back up willl work for a while then the same thing

It's possible that the altenator is worn out ( brushes worn down ) The action of starting the engine vibrates the altenator and the brushes contac for awhile. after it quits try wrapping on the altenator with a stick and see if it comes on. If it does take the altenator to the store with you and traded it in for a rebuilt unit.

My 2005 ford explorer the charging system light comes on when i get over 2000 rpms.. i put a test light on altenator wire that comes from the altenator to the battery. and accelerated the the vehicle while...

the alternator bushing is worn and failing when the alternator reaches over 2000 rpm it basically does not contact the bushings any longer and will not make contact, make sure the belt is not slipping, other than putting a load test on the alternator to verify that it is working properly, as it may be the gauge. A test light will not help. A battery alternator tester is relatively cheep, even a corner garage may have one and help you out. Being an 05 it is completely possible that is the alternator all together.

Battery light stays on

start engine and get someone to hold rpm at 1500 then disconnect battery and if engine stops replace altenator ,if it keeps going then warning light control is U/S but to repair will nesitate removing the altenator and stripping it to change the brush /regulator unit and this can cost nearly as much as a recon altenator ,if it charges then leave it alone it could run for 50.000 miles or more like this

fit a new altenator and not a secondhand one from the scrappers also check the big block connector and fuses in front of the battery as in the uk they get wet and corrode ,this is where the altenator feed runs from ,try disconnecting the big wire and flashing it to see if it sparks ??quickest way to test for charging is to start car and then disconnect battery ..if it stops its not charging.quick load test for altenator speed up engine too 2000 rpm then disconnect battery and turn everything on if angine stops the altenator is not pushing out enough voltage....right anyone seen a nice mk4 zodiac executive for me ??
