Thanks for choosing FIxYa and welcome to the site. You need to take off the cap to see the rotor. Once you take it off, try starting the key and make sure it turns. It is much easier to look at the timing chain. It should have a front cover that you can take off. It should only have a bolt or two that has to be taken off. Just take it off and you should have enough room to inspect the chain. If it is not broken and fuel is ruled out, you may have a cam sensor or crank sensor bad. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Best wishes and thanks for using FIxYa.

Testimonial: "it would help if you notified me where the rotor is. I traced the spark plug wires to the source and its just one solid chunk of plastic. "

That solid piece of plastic should be your cap. It comes off and the rotor is behind that. The cap shouldn't be hard to take off, probably just a few screws. Once the cap is off, you will see your rotor. If it is spinning, it may be fine. Look to see if your see build up on the rotor, usually black in color. Also, check your cap and make sure it has all metal contacts and is not damaged. If it is not spinning when you are cranking the car, it is not working. Your car is out of time as well.

No sparks on 95 ford escort gt 1.8

If it is in fact a 1995 Escort GT, congratulations. The 1991-1996 Ford Escort GT is powered by a 1.8L DOHC Mazda engine, the same engine is also found in the, 1991-1995 Ford Escort LXE, 1990-99 Mazda Protege, 1991-95 Mercury Tracer LTS and 1994-97 Kia Sephia GS. The engine is over-built - I have a 1995 Escort GT in my garage with over 200,000 miles on it. I recently had the engine out of the car to replace the freeze plugs and I can tell you the following - it doesn't have an EGR valve but it does have a mounting pad on the driver's side of the lower plenum that was cast but never machined for one, it's Vane Air Flow like on an RX-7 or Protege not MAS, and the crank angle sensor is contained in the distributor - it's not part of the harmonic balancer. The PCV valve is mounted on the back of the the valve cover on the passenger side and the hose goes to the middle of the upper plenum not to the non-existent EGR valve. And absolutely none of this is helping you get your car started.

You need to troubleshoot this like a Mazda product, not a Ford since the only Ford parts in the engine bay are the sheet metal and fuel line connectors. There's no quick or easy answer to what's going on, but I would recommend getting a Haynes/Chilton's manual or at least reference one for their trouble-shooting guides before throwing dollars at a problem like this since it can be anything from fouled plugs to the ECU.

Start at the spark plugs and work backward, it's cheaper. Pull one of the plug wires off of a spark plug and have someone turn the engine over while you check for spark by holding the plug wire close to the engine. If you get a spark, then check check the plugs - oil fouled, gapped correctly, etc. If you don't get a spark, check distributor cap and rotor along with plug wires. It just keeps going, that's why you really should get a repair manual of some sort so you can do it in an orderly fashion.

Just had the engine rebuilt, checked out the battery, filled up the gas tank went 19.4 miles and went home and it would not start, kick over real good but it won't start like there is no gas going into the...

There are a number of items to check.
1. validate that the fuel pump is pumping gas from the tank to the engine.
2. Check the spark wires on the spark plugs, make sure there is a spark to the plugs.
3. Check the spark to the coil by removing the connection that comes from the battery and delivers the voltage to the coil.
4. When the overhaul of the engine was done were all the filters between the fuel tank and the injectors replaced with new ones. Were the injectors cleaned?
5. Make sure the engine idle is set properly as being timed right. Quite possibly the timing may have come out of adjustment if the engine is not idling.
6. Check the gap on the spark plugs to make sure it is not too wide between the insulator and the spark igniter.
Do all these things I have mentioned and hopefully you will resolve the problem.
Have a nice day.

Ei have a firing problem no fire getting to the spark plug

You most likely have a bad spark plug wire. That is the cheapest fix for the problem. One way to test the plug wire is to take a pair of pliers and grab the plug wire while the engine is running and to pull the plug wire off WITH THE PLIERS!! DO NOT DO WITHOUT PLIERS!!! If the engine doesn't start to stall then that is a bad wire. Unfortunately this problem can also be a bad coil or distributor. But I suggest the plug wire first.

2001 ford escort. engine turns over but will not start. pulled the plugs and motor gets good compression, replace plugs and wires, still nothing, then i put new timing belt-still nothing, checked fuel filter...

The engine needs three things to run, fuel, air and a spark at the right moment. Check the static timing of the motor, if those marks line up. You did not say you were getting any spark at the plugs. If you have spark, then try a little starting fuild into the intake while turning it over. If you have fuel delivery to the cylinders, the spark is coming at the right moment then it should be running. Any error codes set?
