We have lost our keys (ignition and compartment) for our 1983 Olds Cutlass Supreme. I've tried 3 dealerships with my VIN and they tell me it's too old, they can't access key codes. I have the build sheet and, of course, the boxes for the "key codes" are empty. Locksmith says it'll cost $400 to make new keys...there must be another option.
I would also call another locksmith as that price is ridiculos, I had an ignition switch key made for my Honda when I lost the key, for 40 dollars.I would also call another locksmith as that price is ridiculos, I had an ignition switch key made for my Honda when I lost the key, for 40 dollars.

Inquire at your local dealer if they can make a new key using your VIN number. If not, replace the ignition lock (new lock and key should be available at your local autoparts store. A mobile locksmith can also be called to do the work for you (and rekey your doors to match). If you disconnect the battery, the ignition will be disabled.
Go to good locksmith and make a copy of ignition key.Your keys must be badly worn and or resistor(antitheft)could be weak.Good locksmith can make you a new replacement at reasonable price. Also make sure you wipe ignition key if it gets wet.If it wont start wait 3 mins minimum before trying to restart.
Last resort would be changing ignition on column.
a lot of gm vehicles use a single wire alternator the only way to tell is to either look at the back of the alternator or go to a parts store and look at a new alternator for you vehicle
Does it crank at all or is there nothing when you turn the key? If the resistor chips in the key(s) are bad, they shut down the fuel system for 3 minutes and it won't crank. I've had this happen and the problem was solved when I got new keys.
