Guessing here, might help to know the make/model/year/engine.
Sounds like you're running in "limp mode" because one of your sensors is either bad or simply not hooked up. Perhaps TPS (throttle position sensor) or MAF (Mass AirFlow)
Sounds like you may have accidentally removed the vacuum line to the modulator valve on the back of the transmission. (worst case, the headers may have burned through the hose, but either way, this is more than likely the problem. Hope this helps Chris.
You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.
