Hi, the proper procedure to replace cam sensor is pick up phone and call tow truck. If vehicle runs still call tow truck. A failed OR damaged cam synchroniser will RUIN YOUR DAY. DO NOT DRIVE because most common failure is magnent coming out of sensor and destruction of cam synchroniser will occur.
The job is not for amateur and should be performed by a qualified technician with the right synchroniser timing tools..

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Detach the electrical connector for the CKP sensor.
  4. Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolts and remove the CKP sensor shield.
  5. Remove the CKP sensor retaining bolts and remove the CKP sensor.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal.

My camshaft sensor on a 1999 ford explorer needs to be replaced

It's located on top of the driverside valve cover next to the oil fill cap, theres a metal clip holding the connector, push it down and it will pull off, then remove the 8mm bolt and twist it back and forth while pulling at the time.
