Although the 1st response is very good (and usually the case) there is another problem rhat also causes the same problem if you have an automatic stick. To check, first be on flat ground so you do not roll. Put the key in ignition and rotate the key forward to first stop point. Do Noyt Start the engine because all you want to do is move the stick to Neutral (N), while pushing the stick firmly toward the passenger side and shifting, when it clicks into neutral, now shift it into Park, still maintaining pressure your right passenger side. With your left hand turn the key forward to start the engine. You may have to to do this a couple of times to get the feel of it. The engine may very well start.

This has happened on my 1990 RS Camero oh at least 3 times. What you are doing is pressing the shift stick against the shift plate in the councol. What happens over time is this semi circular plate bends away from you from shift wear, and when you push toward your right you are making the contact needed to tell the complete the circuit. Dust and paper can stop you cold too.

To fix permanently, get star wrench and lift the consol plates up, keeping track of the star nut as you remove them. Usually just reaching with your hand and pulling the vertical semi circular plate toward the drivers side just a little will align plate and stick just fine. Good as new! Eventualy the plate wears out, I have replaced mine with one I found at a junkyard. Wish I knew what else to call the plate, sorry folks, I just know this works. Years ago after I got one of hyper expensive repair jobs that fixed nothing, I lucked out and met an "old school" mechanic who shook his head, smiled, and showed me this. I guess I'm old school too, so I hope this helps. If that is your problem , this is a really easy fix. Pass it on!

Check voltage at battery has to be 12 volts , turn lights on see if they work when u turn key, if not bad ground wire from battery or at frame, check volt gauge inside car see if it drops when u turn key, if so battery is likely problem.

Definitely sounds like an electrical problem. I would check your fuses and relays. I'm no car expert but I know there are fuses/relays for the starter and ignition. If those are all good, follow/check the wiring from the starter back to the battery. There's probably some kind of ignition control module (icm) also. When mine went out in my Chevy truck it did the same as what you've explained yours is doing or not doing I should say. Good luck!

Wont start

the clicking noise is usually 2 things, step on try jump starting car and if starts have battery tested as it is probably bad (free testing at most chain auto stores), the other usual problem is that the starter has gone bad, when whoever tried turning off car while driving might have put into start mode and burnt out the starter when it engaged at high speed.

Does it not try at all to start car? Don't suppose there is a heat shield missing that protects starter from exhaust heat.
