Question about 1993 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

1993 Dodge Dakota . While backing out of the driveway several things occurred. ABS and Brake dash indicators lit up, brake lights stopped working , right turn signal stopped working (I still get the clicking noise but sounds erratic ), "Forgot head-lights on" alarm stopped working. Brakes operate properly and left directional operates properly. Where should I start ? Are problems related electricaly or are they seperate issues?

Battery is about three months and old should not be problem but then you never know . I will check light bulb for left turn signal but in past when the bulb burns out the clicking noise ceases, in this case there is an erratic clicking noise . I assume it is caused by the relay.

I can check and change the brake relay easily enough. Will a faulty brake relay enable both the ABS and Brake idiot light? Will

I do not have an Auto On Light system. Lights are either on or off . There is a mid position for parking lights... When head lights are on and you turn engine off and open driver side door the idiot alarm sounds to indicate the head lights have been left on. Could be door switch perhaps it is piggy backed with interior doom light, I will verify interior doom light with door open.

Is ABS sensor a normaly open or closed switch and if yes which position would it normaly be in?

I can't imagine they are all related directly-the turn signal is probably a burned out bulb. The brake lights are controlled by a switch attached to the brake petal linkage and can be checked by getting down low enough to observe it's operation while you push the petal-you do not need to have the key on to check it, and it helps to have a spotter to watch the lights while you operate the petal and try to adjust the alignment/travel of the switch. 'Forgot headlights on"...? That's an odd one, you have a sensor, usually on the dash, maybe it needs to be cleaned, or your light switch may not be set properly for auto-on operation. The ABS sensor is located on top of the rear axle in the center of the carrier, and they are known for wearing out-you can crawl under the car and check the wiring and connector to it to see of that might be an issue. Most of the time people end up replacing the sensor.

With all that said, you should first get a digital volt meter and check the battery-voltage should be 12.5 or over when the vehicle has sat overnight, before starting. After starting it up, the battery should read close to 15 volts and slowly drop down to about 14.2 at idle. If you find this is not the case, it probably is responsible for many of your issues-bad electrical system (low/high voltage) causes lots of strange problems on modern cars.

Batteries can and do go bad even if new-depends on how they were constructed and how the type of service they have to perform-a conventional battery really does not do well with deep discharges, so I'd check this out just because it might explain a lot of these issues. Your 'clicking' for the turn signals comes from the flasher unit, not a relay. It is behind the dash.

I was not referring to a relay here, I was referring to the brake switch, located above the brake petal.

Try spraying the door latches with PB Blaster and let them soak then open/close 10-15 times, that has real possibilities.

It is not an on/off switch, it is a hall-effect sensor that reads the pulses from a reluctor inside the case and reports back to the ABS computer.

1994 dodge dakota my headlights and tail lights and brake lights don't work my abs and parking brake lights are on my dash lights don't work either I replaced the headlight switch and still no

These are all different circuits. The brake lights are on a 10amp fuse - the headlights are on a 50amp fuse - and the parking and dash lights are on a 20amp fuse.
Do you have power going into the headlight switch and the brake light switch ?

1998 dodge Dakota Ok so I just got this truck and when I got it the abs light and brake light were on plus the speedo doesn't work sometimes I replaced the rear speed sense on the diff but the lights...

If the red brake light and the ABS light are both lit up on the dashboard, do NOT drive the vehicle. It indicates a major malfuntion with the brake system. The red light indicates low brake fluid or the parking brake engaged. The yellow ABS without the red light, indicates a problem the computer found and it disables the ABS system while still having conventional brakes. Since both are lit, it needs the brake system repaired. What you replaced on the rear diff was probably the rear ABS sensor. The vehicle speed sensor for the speedometer should be located on the rear of your transfer case if you have 4WD, or on the rear of the trans if you have 2WD.

HOW TO GET RID OF THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ON DASH 2005 dakota

It depends upon why they are lit. Are you having issue with the speedometer as well? If so, replace the speed sensor in the rear differential. Otherwise, see a mechanic to determine why the lighs are lit.

Brake light & ABS light on, speedo problem

I recently had the same problem on my 99 dakota R/T. My symptoms included the abs and brake light staying lit, speedo failing to work at all speeds and the truck would occassionally stall when coming to a stop. I ended up replacing the rear abs speed sensor (on top of the rear diff) and all is well now. The truck runs exactly as it should. You are looking at a $30-$35 dollar part.

when brake light is constantly on it normally means the rear brake light dont work (bulb blown) ABS normally means sensors pushed too far or teeth on abs cv axle could be damaged or bent. check that first.

on the 93 there is a problem with the abs system. there are several things that could be wrong. if i remember correctly the module is behind the passenger side kick panel. you will find a single wire coming off the module. if you ground it then turn on the key it will flash the brake lights in the dash. count the flashes this is the code for the error. it will help in the repair. as for the second truck you have a leak that needs repaired.

well because the abs light indicates a problem with your anti-lock braking system you need to find out why it is on.... keep in mind one quick way you would disengage your cruise is with the brake pedal.
under the hood is a fuse panel (often located near the battery) ... see if there is a relay in the for your cruise... replace that.

Dash warning light

Do you mean the ABS and BRAKE lights? If so, the ABS module is bad which causes both lights to come on. After rebooting, the module gets tested and the ABS light will come on after a few seconds. If it a module problem the BRAKE light will also come on. The brakes will work normally, but will not provide the anti-lock feature.

Cluster light

The anti-lock brake system is not working. Ergo, both lights of brake and ABS will stay lit until you take it to you Dodge dealership and have them check you brake system. One of these days you will not be able to brake due to the failure, no matter if it runs great or not. Check engine, probably spark plugs misfiring, needing a tune-up, or maybe an oxygen sensor from the exhaust system not reading or working correctly.
