SOURCE: ADVISE

well dude, it depends on what the shape the vehicle is in. i just bought a loaded 2001 durango 4x4 all power, black leather, heated seats...etc. i bought it for $2800. but its had 2 weird noises, (probably why i got such a good deal) one sounded like lifter noise in the engine that slowly went away for the most part when the engine heated up, it turned out i had an exhaust manifold bolt snapped off in the block. after a trip to the parts store, 60 cents, and 30 minutes i had the problem solved. then the other weird noise was a loud humming noise heard from about 20mph-80mph. some grinding when i turned, lots of clunking noise. thankfully my brother is a mechanic, he said it was probably a wheel bearing. so i went to O'riely auto parts, they wanted $237 for the whole wheel bearing/hub. so i went home and ordered one off the internet from AM autoparts, shipped to my house for $103 instead of O'reily's 237. and turns out it completely solved my problem, took about 1 hour to change. love the durango, drives good, sounds good, looks good. now i have a cruise controll problem...lol. still love the truck!

Go to www.FCPgroton.com and enter your make and year, then check under timing components. They sale a few different kits for this job. I would recommend doing the timimg belt, idler pulley, tensioner, water pump at serpentine belt at a minimum. you can check and see if you need to do the cam seals also one of their kits includes all these. I would only do those if they were leaking.

Front end growls when in 4 wheel drive

Before using the 4wd, did you have the transfer case, front differential, and front axle locking hubs inspected, properly lubed, and tested? No one ever does, so don't feel bad if you don't know what shape the 4wd components are in. You probably haven't used 4wd in last five months. Most people don't ever put their 4wd vehicles in 4wd mode, even though the service manual says to operate the vehicle for a minimum of 10 low speed miles every 3000-4000 miles. This helps maintain the proper function of any limited slip parts, internal bearings, and gear components. Operating in 4wd periodically also helps insure any electric devices are working. What you may be hearing is the unused front differential parts, transfer case bits, or electrically controlled locking hubs wearing out from the lack of use, proper maintenance, or just plain age (after all you did say it's a 2001). Front pinion and differential bearings are not usually ever spun/rotated unless the transfer case and hubs are locked in 4wd. If they were starved of gear oil, or dry when you went 4wheeling, you torn them up. Refer to the owner's manual (if you still have it) for proper 4wd opration. You'd be surprised that there are proceedures to do in order to maintain a reliable vehicle. Don't ever just drop it in gear and expect it to work..... I mean come on.... after all, It is a Dodge! Your next step is to find a full service mechanic, with a complete selection of tools and shop supplies (especally a hydrolic press) and schedule an appointment to have the 4wd front components inspected and replaced if neccessary.

1995 olds cutless is it my transmission

oil condition could be a problem
I am inclined to think that you took the car to an auto spares shop that does free fault codes reading, you will find that it is servos/ solenoids or problem TCM that is causing the problems
may even be problem wiring connectors or harness problems around the transmission
I am sure that it is not a transmission problem , just what controls the ration changes

4 wheel will not engage on 2002 DODGE DURANGO

you will need to let the durango sit in the nuetral position without moving, then turn the knob from 2WD to 4WD. if that doesnt work, try putting the durango in reverse and then back to drive a couple times. you may have some mud/dirt/oil caked up under there interfering with the 4WD moving parts.
