That really depends on what car you have, the cars MPG's, and how many gallons are left in the tank when the light comes on. If you know these three things you can get a rough estimation on how many miles you have left. On average I have found that the automakers have the light come on when you have anywhere from 20-40 miles left. Again that depends on what your vehicles MPG rating is. Let me know if i was of any assistance, if not, let me know the above stats and i can give you a better range. Have a nice day!

The first question I have is how many miles on the Lumina? If well over 100,000 Miles I strongly suspect a clogged Catalytic Converter. Before all the routine maintenance was the vehicle running normally? Another condition could be a worn out fuel pump. These are electric pumps in the fuel tank and typically will eventually fail to supply adequate fuel pressure and volume of fuel required for normal running conditions. Have an ASE Certified Technician check the Fuel Pressure and Flow Rate to determine if it is within manufacturers specifications. I had a 1994 Pontiac Transport with 175,000+ Miles and the Fuel Pump failed. I replaced it myself and then the Catalytic Converter clogged up. Both problems caused low power and stumble conditions.

Does the Check Engine Light come on when the Ignition switch is turned on before starting the engine? If not, you obviously have a bad bulb in the Instrument Cluster. This requires carefully removing the Instrument Cluster and partial dis-assembly to replace the bulb(s). I strongly suggest replacing ALL the Bulbs in the instrument cluster because of the age of the vehicle.

Is the 3.1L engine fuel injected or carburated? If FI see a professional.

Exactly what should the fuel gauge needle read when my fuel light comes on in a 98 hyundai excel? It is coming on about 10 milimitres before it even hits the E when my uncles hyundai excel reaches the E...

Hi, your fuel light is working as it was designed to, in order to give you some time to get to a gas station , like if your out on the freeway in the middle of nowhere and you were not paying attention to fuel gauge your fuel light would remind you that you have about 40 miles plus or minus to go before you are out of fuel but why find out, even when it is on E you might have a gallon or so left, it's all to help you from running out of fuel, a good rule of thumb is to not let it get below 1/4 tank and that way you will never see your light come on or run out of gas, and it's also good for in the tank fuel pumps ,I keep mine on on the full end.

When the fuel light comes on in my 1985 town car, how many miles left do i have in the tank before she runs dry?

30 or so,but the light should say"fuel pump overheating" since the fuel cools the pump. It's hard on the pump to run it low.

When my gas light comes on how many miles do i have left before i run compeletly out of gas?

Most vehicle have about 2 gallons of fuel when the light comes on usually around 20-40 miles depending on the vehicle. I would suggest always keeping atleast a minimum of a quarter tank of fuel at all times if possible. Dirt/debris that can accumulate over time in your gas tank will be pumped through your fuel system once it is using the bottom of the barrel reserves this can cause a restricted fuel filter and your injectors to be clogged too.

2000 E-350 V-10. P0174 with exhaust fix

Before I even finished reading this i knew you had a clogged cat. If you have fixed everything you mentioned i would lean towards a clogged cat. This is a large reason this code pops up.

To check this you could pull that cat out and drive around and see if the code comes back, make sure to stay away from the police though.
