Question about Ford Escort

1 Answer

I've been told that my greabox "is bad and your gears could jam at any time" by a garage today. I'd taken the car in due to a whirring "loose" sound when I change gear but the noise is not constant and I have no problems changing gear, they're not sticking or popping out of place - I know my clutch probably needs replacing and it was mentioned to me that I could need to have my transmission fluid level checked. I'm taking the car for a second opinion on Monday to a different garage, but does someone with real knowledge about Ford Escorts think my garage is scaremongering me and telling me the whole truth or is it more likely to be a clutch/tranmission fluid level & flywheel issue - I'm trying to decide whether to keep the car and pay for the repairs or to get rid of it - it also has a smoky problem but I'm planning to buy a reconditioned engine if I decide to keep the car. Any help and advice would be wonderful, thankyou

Wont start. Starter tries to engage but theres a "whirring" noise instead of the car starting

Sounds like starter solenoid is failing to kick in. The whirring is most likely the starter motor turning, but the teeth aren't engaging on the flywheel ring gear due to failed solenoid.

It could very well be the gear box. Before I read that part of your question I was leaning that way. It could also be a malfunctioning computer chip. I would find another garage that will diagnose the problem independently. Just tell them the problem don't say you had another garage look at it already. If they have the same result go with the lower bid or ask if they can be the lower bid. If they are different diagnosis you may want a third opinion. Of course this is assuming that each diagnosis is free. Good luck.
