The linkage from the choke knob to the carbeurator is likely disconnected, check the linkage at the carb and follow it back from there to find where it came apart.

How does the choke work on a 1980 Toyota 20r work

THe choke works from an element or hot air from the manifold on a bimetalic spring that is connected to the choke butterfly. It is held open by a cam plate on the accelerator butterfly that allows the choke to close when cold after you depress the accellerator. To adjust -loosen off the screws that hold on the cap and turn either way according to the notches stamped into the cap . Retension the screws when adjusted. Make sure that the element is getting power or the heat pipes are in place

How do you check an automatic choke

It depends on the vehicle. Some or all manufacturers have a specific procedure for testing the choke and all its linkages and controls. But just observing your choke in operation from a cold engine (choke butterfly valve barely open) to a warm engine (choke valve fully open) should give you a good idea of how well it works. The electric assist on chokes is mainly for opening the choke a biy sooner than the mechanical operation of heating the spring inside the black choke housing, causing it to expand and open the choke valve.

Automatic choke stays on causing engine overheat and poor fuel economy

Hello, when you say that the auto-choke is "on", you mean that the choke plate is stuck closed on the carburetor. This causes an overly rich fuel mixture and fast idle and other problems as you have hinted at. There is a wire that runs from the black cap on the left side of the carburetor that runs to the alternator. On my Festiva, the wire is red in color and its the only wire coming from the black cap with a bi-metal spring inside. You need to check the wire for a short circuit and to test if voltage is getting to it from the alternator. My guess would be that the wire came loose or it is not being powered by the alternator. So get a 12V test light and test the wire leading to the choke spring cap to see where the break in the wire is. Run a continuity test from one end to the other and look for 0 Ohms for a good connection. If you have continuity and good current, then I would say that your bi-metal spring it broken in the choke cap, so you can replace the cap by removing the 3 screws or rivets and replacing it with a new one.

2001 mercedes c240 has a really rough start but when the car almost dies I turn the car off wait 3 seconds and it starts perfect. Next comes the issue with having to warm it up before driving anywhere...

Gasoline- thank you. Warm up is not an issue like diesel is. Sounds like the choke is is either wide open or over choking. With the engine cold, remove the air cleaner and note where the plate is at the opening of the carb. If it is wide open then without touching anything else and engine not running, step down on the gas pedal and see if the choke plate reset itself to restricter the carb inlet. If it didn't, then take some WD 40 and spray the linkages and the rod ends holdin the choke plate.By hand work the plate and linkage holding the gas open at the carb. Then set the plate to wide open and do the gas pedal thing agan to see if choke sets itself back to restricting the carb intake. If it does, start the engine and as the engine warms upm the choke plate should start opening on its own and you are off and running. Roitine question. Is your air cleaner clean? If the choke plate needs adjusting. get back to me. K? Good luck Remember to press the gas pedal down once before cranking. That sets the choke for cold start. Hope this helped you Good luck Note, the WD40 won't hurt anything but avoid spraying with engine running or when engine is hot..

Hi ok so when i put my car in drive and push on the accelerator it will barely go...How come?? My book said Check choke plate but dont know where its located at.

The choke plate should be located on the side of the intake manifold, just under the air intake assembly. Most likely on the driver's side. Remove your air intake so you can see into the manifold and you will be able to tell if the choke plate is stuck by having an assistant press the accelerator (while the vehicle is off). While it is pressed, can you see into the manifold? If not, the choke plate may be stuck, blocking your view and the air from coming in.
