I was wanting to know what was causing the fuel pump relay's to overheat and go bad. Not the fuel pump itself. When I put a new relay in the truck cranks and run for 7 to 10 days.

  • clohunt Apr 01, 2011

I have put three FUEL PUMP RELAY SWITCHES on a
1997 C1500 4.3 chevy pickup. The relay switches get real hot and the truck stops running. I replace it with another switch and it runs for about a week and a half. I'm asking what is causing the switches to go bad.

  • clohunt Apr 01, 2011

Yes Pier please send me the wiring schematic. clohunt@sbcglobal.net

Sometimes it also act like it doesn't have any power.

  • clohunt Apr 02, 2011

I read it about 30 minutes after you posted it.

Fax #713-635-5485. I'm in Houston, Texas

  • clohunt Apr 02, 2011

I'm not understanding whether you are saying I need a new fuel pump or is it the wiring at the fuel pump. after all you mentioned a ground problem. As for the fax mine is not working for
    some reason.

  • clohunt Apr 02, 2011

The pump is only 6 years old. Only a blank sheet of paper is coming through with a small
    square on it.

THe way the fuel system on the 4.3 is like this The vehicle has a back up power supply for the fuel pump fuse # 9 powers the system 20 amp .This goes to the re lay but also splits and goes to the oil pressure sending unit on circuit 440 org wire . Then they reconnect past the oil pressure unit on a gray wire gray 1 and gray 2 and this wire feeds the power to the fuel pump . So even if the relay were bad the vehcile should still start it just takes more cranking time for the engine to build up enough pressure to trips the switch inside the sending unit If you have the orginal pump in the vehicle there wore problems with the wireing to the pump it wasn't restance wire and over heated causeing problems the new pumps have a differant connector on the pump and the wires need to be cut and spliced to correct the problem This sounds like a problem with the pump wireing eighter a bad gound for the pump motor or to much resistance on the feed wire . How dose the truck run when it is running do you get codes like mis fire codes dose it do OK going up hill under acceleration . I have the complete wireing schematic for this system if you need it i would have to E . MAIL it to you .You could also try this red wire under the hood thats called the fuel prime test connector its not pluged into anything on some vehicles its near the master cylinder and on others its near the blower motor for the heater fan if the relay is bad you can't check this but its a stright shot to the fuel pump motor check the resistance or you could do this off the gray feed wire curcuit 120 from the oil pressure sending unit . It has to be a ground problem or a resistance problem with the pump If you need the schematic let me know pier_j

    ok send this

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

Iwould think that the pump is causeing the relay to over load if the over load is not comeing from the fuse #9 and not blowing then it has to be a bad ground or to much resistance at the wireing at the pump and i will send you the schemitac i just need to scan it out of my manual load it and i have your E. MAIL address now give me a little time and i will send it to you thank you

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

Im sorry i can't make this thing work off the scaned and the site it temprealy down so i can't send it by E.MAIL IF YOU GIVE ME A fax # I will fax it to you i hope you are not to fear away in an other contury or somrthing

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

Im haveing troble SENDING e.mail and attaching documents if you can send me a fax #i will fax this shematic to you now but i can tell the problem is your fuel pump i;ve been through this to many times done it seen it and know of the disign problems with it its not your fault this is happening but if you can give me your fax i can send this and you can look at it and see how it works for your self and like i said the problem is at the pump

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

OK huston i sent it let me know if you got it and it went through . If you have any more questions feel free to ask pier_j

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

So you are saying you did not receive the fax it went through and said it did . The problem may be at my end i had to replace the mechine a month or so ago set it up right and i keep haveing problems but sometimes it works good i don't know I will try again withthe fax But if the pump is the orginal pump its likely time to replace it you are getting codes like P0304 and problems with power loss up hill under load and that will make the MIL light come on . The motor in the pump is shorting and you will get stuck one day soon don't let the tank run dry that will do it in for sure .You could try replaceing the fuel filter but this pump olny lasts so long and the trouble is the tank has to come down to replace it so there will be other parts involed like straps and fuel lines its not a good disign Ok im going to try the fax again

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

I'll try to send you the fax again later to day i need to figure out why this is not working I set the mechine up 2 weeks ago by the numbers did the hp test fax and they say it works .If the pump is 6 yaers old then you are going to need the schematic to figure out what is worrg with it a ground or the wireing to it The new style pumps have a lot of upgrades to them and last longer then the orginal ones did and that was 10 years tops I' ll get it working and send this to you thanks for your understanding

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2011

What a pain in the you know what but i got this thing to work why don't they put a button on it that says attack to Email. I receved your E MAIL look at the schematic it has to be a ground or a short that is blowing the relay and i supose its possible it could be a problem with the oilpressure unit but i think you would have seen the gauge doing strange things Hopefuly its not the VCM but i have the manual if you need more information let me know how it goes

Hi, several things can cause the fuel pump to fail. The fuel pump not being used for a long time would be one reason. Bad fuel or contaminated fuel would be another reason. If it is a electric fuel pump, then running the car out of fuel will damage a electric fuel pump. A dirty fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to work harder than it should and will cause it to wear out prematurely as well.

Hi, the relay is overheating due to a bad ground wire on the fuel pump, or it is having to work to hard due to the fuel filter being blocked or needs replacing or cleaning (Favourite if you keep running the fuel tank low as this drags the rubbish through from the tank and is the reason for fitting it).

Have you checked the "Bump Switch" this is a small inertia switch which turns offf the fuel pump to prevent it running in the event of an accident. They are usually mounted in the boot(trunk/load area) . There should also be one mounted under the front of the vehicle to initiate the Airbags. They usually cut the earh return(at least it does on my Granada, XR3i and Sierra XR4x4) hope this helps.

When you turn the ignition to run, the fuel pump only runs for three seconds, or until the starter is engaged or the vehicle starts. If you are turning the key on and crawling under the truck to check power, you won't have any. Have a buddy crank the truck while you are checking voltage to see what you really have going on. You are correct, the purple wire is for the fuel gauge. The grey wire is the fuel pump power. Also check to make sure the wire harness going to the fuel pump did not get pinched between the fuel tank and the frame. Have seen this happen after a fuel pump replacement.

Put new fuel pump in old one was bad but now i have no power to it and can't find pump fuse in any of the 3 fuse boxes?

The fuse for the fuel pump and fuel pump relay is located in the fuse box in the engine compartment. The one on the passenger side of the vehicle. Below I have given you a picture of the layout of the fuses. The fuse that handles those is the one marked PCM BAT. Also the relay in the number 14 spot is the fuel pump relay. I hope this helps and good luck.

the fuel pump has 2 fuses 1 in the engine compartment fuse box and 1 in the fuse box inside dash. Also the fuel pump relay is located in the glove box on the passenger side their is 3 relays in there. If you put your hand on the relays and turn the key to the on position you should feel it click and then you will know which one it is. If you do not feel it then this is likely your problem but check the 2 fuses first.

Fuel pump constantly runs, even when ignition switch is off. 1991 Chevy C1500. Put on new relay switch, but the pump is on, even with relay disconnected

sounds like you haven't got the right relay or the replacement has failed. pull one relay at a time and go back to the rear of the vehicle and listen for the pump. make sure the key is on when you do the test.

Fuel Pump Replacement

Most chevrolet models have the fuel pump inside the gas tank. to replace it, you will need to drop the tank... and you should see it on the top. BTW for safety sake... don't try this with a full fuel tank.
