Question about Ford F-150

My 95 F-150 4x4 with 305 stalls at random times. Mostly when I am at a dead stop. As long as the truck is still moving a little it will just drop some RPM and come back. Other times it fully stalls out. Re-start isnt a problem, it re-fires every time. I took it to a mechanic and he changed the idle air pump, the throttle body gasket (due to deterioration and age), and did an injector/intake cleaning. It is still having the problem, but not as bad. I have pulled the vacuum line from the EGR valve and there seems to be a lack of vacuum pressure but the is still some. Is there a required amout of vacuum that should be on the EGR sensor? Could the EGR be bad? Or could it be comething as simple as a bad O2 sensor? Usually when something goes awry with this truck it usually is something so simple that it gets overlooked. Could you provide guidance?

Some causes about EGR valve and stall condition coul be:

  • Downstream hose is disconnected.
  • Downstream hose is plugged (ice).
  • Plugged or damaged EGR tube.

  • Maybe the EGR is working fine, but the EGR position sensor is out of range. Or... maybe the EGR is stuck in the open position causing the engine to drown in exaust. In the old days you could cycle the EGR by applying vacuum to it, but now they are operated with an electric solenoid.

    Any fault code or check engine turn on there? Can will sound like a fuel delivery problem. Are you check some probably fuel filter clogged, not necessarily but iis possible. Also, check your plug wires to make sure they aren't burnt or cracked which could cause arching.

    This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

    only hot engine. (engine options size not stated)
    there is a simple cheap tool to use in each step below.
    the ignition switch bad, would have killed many things on the dash
    at stall, so was not it... guessing is expensive.
    there are in fact 50 ways to stall and engine. huge list. nobody guesses all 50 one by one, we do what is called testing and diagnosis.
    no year stated, so all anwers are generic but correct.
    not in order, (cept a good engine is first) failures are mostly random.
    ill state the one item no random (a tune up , ever get one? the 60kmile interval tune up , if not, fail, no car runs 300k miles with none.
    1: bad 12vdc power, loss of battery power, you see lamps and dials on dash and radio or what ever go dead at the stall , the be lost DC power .
    2 : bad engine, engines can run perfect cold and fail hot.
    one is, a valve not sealing hot , and compression lost on 1 or more cylinders. (this is first and after bad DC power, the rest below is useless to help hide this gross failure.
    3: bad spark, (tune up time)
    4: bad fueling.?
    A: too much fuel flooding. spark tips soaked in raw fuel, 1 or all 4 or 6.
    B: too little , (tune up person forgot to change the fuel filter,? really>?
    too little, low fuel pressure.
    C;leaking or clogged injectors.
    4: EGR sticking open can happen at most traffic stops .
    clean it, (again a standard sevice check)
    5: ISC stuck closed, clean it. (you discovered that the fast right foot
    saved the stall, easy, bingo loss of air, ISC stuck closed, hot.
    there are more test. but this is the lions share, we find what of the
    3 paths are failing, engine,spark and fuel.
    btw: the EFI cuts fuel if it even suspects spark is failed. !!!

    1: tune it up this decade? "called doing service points now......."
    2: EGR clean
    3: ISC stuck closed.

    can you save the stall, ? with right foot actions. Y/N

    what engine, 4.0L I6 2.5L? I4
    ever tuned it up? all spark and filters, the 60k mile, ever?
    this post is random engine stalls?
    so does it stall hot or cold or both
    does it stall moving, right foot planted, cruisng
    or only parked, or only as you come to a stop
    do dash lamps/gauges or? go out before the stall? (look)
    CEL off running.. ok, no DTCs stored if USA car. is it?

    my guess is this stall can happen hot or cold engine.
    location not in klondike (location not stated, so wild guess.)
    hot stalls, ?
    1 lets say coming to a stop. is very common EGR sticking open
    2 never tuned up, ever or even the last decade?
    3: ISC/iIAC sticking closed, jeeps love to do that any I4 , its a big issue. the idle stepper motor cone gets gummed up, clean it.
    i clean both my jeeps, I4 ISC like 100 times since 1988.
    4: bad TPS. but usually it throws DTC'S for this. if driven hard)

    some I6' have no EGR valve. PCM has no EGR pins.!
    you can monitor DC power at the CIG lighter, to see if power drops
    at stall, easy, 13.3v to 15v is normal or ALT system is dead..

    make sure the Automatic shut down relay is not being shut down
    by PCM (DB/YL wire) goes to 12v is shut down, 0v is not.
    the PCM can cut the ASDR for may reasons, oil pressure or battery overheat,? many, best it to find out of this RELAY is dropping EFI
    off LINE. IT can .

    lets do stalls.
    i see tachometer drop below 800 RPM hot .
    i try to save the stall, ISC stuck closed, and my right foot
    opens throttle instictively and i save the stall.
    easy, that is loss of air. see why?
    on mine the stupid, ISC/.IAC works like this
    the PCM remembers to ISC positions (stepper)
    one cold start and one hot start (a secret i learned)
    it then looks at water temps and guess (math) at a best start position.
    if it used hot ISC for a COLD start the engine will want to flood due
    to valve mostly closed, from last hot shut down,.
    so floods, use right foot 10% ,

    so i cant comment on what it might be until you state (displacement)
    the engine temps. at fail
    the operational mode, parked, stopping or between 5speed mt shifts.
    or what?
    if it fails parked in drive way.
    or only moving or only coasting.
    stalls on the fly?

    im online at alldata.com and there are 16pages for PCM only.

    this car the PCM controls the Alternator, (a software reg)

    now another tack.
    the car in usa, as OBD2, i connect my scan tool
    and log, i drive and log. car stalls
    i drive home ,play back my logs, and bingo
    i see what happens at the stall, all sitting at my desk.
    warm and dry.
    lost comms,?. is DC power lost.
    Pending DTCS
    real live DTCS
    some DTCS auto clear, at die.
    some PCMs will reset the CKP or CMP sensor or spark failures.
    so can only be seen live. (watching, 1 more secret)

    now Bar stool answsers (any EFI car)
    ever tune it up, ever do the 60K>? if not why not now?
    lost spark, see if spark is being lost at stall, (at all plugs)
    bad fueling, (too high or low fuel pressure at stall)
    loss of air (ISC/IAC failed)
    EGR (if there) stuck wide open,


    if the engine runs perfect at most times, its probably ok
    so is bad spark or fuel
    spark is first. but not if never tuned up.
    fueling is last to check , as PCM cuts fuel with spark failure sensed.
    bad fueling can be bad injection or total loss of air supple , at idle.

    dead, off, and is odometer off too?
    stopped, you mean the car stalled?

    when the engine stalls you see the following (driving school 101)
    1: quiet , now. from engine.
    2: steering and braking get harder. up to 6 times harder.
    3: RPM tachometer shows 0 RPM.
    4: Speed drops and lands on zero as car stops or you run out of down hill free right.

    so did engine stall? does it restart,?

    One suggestion:
    Speed sensor failure.

    Info:
    Some of the classic symptoms, stalling at dead stops. failure to auto lock doors. poor fuel economy. Failure to go to overdrive.


    Recommendation:
    Go to your local parts store and run the failure codes.

    Shop notes:
    Your ECU thinks that the engine is running with out moving, During slow down the engine steps down the idle to match ground speed and as a result the engine will not stall. At present it goes directly to idle and stalls due to drag on motor.

    Crank shaft sensor or air mass meter, is this a v6? I had the 2,6 a4 same fault same miles funny enough. changed the air mass meter is was ok after that. thing is they have so many sensors, you need to get it on a diagnostic machine to be sure.

    1993 Ford Escort 1.9L Auto Randomly Stalls


    I don't have the solution, but I have the same exact problem on my 1991 Escort 1.9L with auto with 120K miles. I replaced the IAC with no difference. In fact I unplugged it, and still had the random stalling. Also disconnected the EGR vacuum line...still stalled randomly. After it stalls it always starts right back up again. Sometimes it will act as if it's going to stall, but comes back to normal idle. Park or Drive makes no difference. Acceleration and all normal driving is fine. The next thing I was going to try is hooking up a timing light and watch to see if the timing light stops flashing as it's stalling, and/or hooking up a fuel pressure gauge somehow, to the fuel rail, to see if the pressure drops when stalling....to figure out if its ignition or fuel related.

    94 sunbird stalls when stopping


    Could be an idle air control problem, or possible vacuum booster trouble, have also seen the baffle broken in the GM tanks and when you brake hard the engine dies. Fill the tank and try it, if it doesn't do it the baffle is bad.
