Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

3 Answers

I have a 2000 Jimmy and when you start it there is a loud pop (sounds like a backfire) from underneath. Sometimes it takes up to 3 times to get it started. It also shakes when you are at a stoplight.

Sounds like it could be a timing problem. Have the timing checked out at a garage and check that the timing chain has not jumped a tooth on the cam sprocket. Before taking the vehicle in to be inspected check all hoses for air leaks and ensure that the throttle body, plate and idle air control interior is thoroughly cleaned out. Also check the crank sensor.

If it is a backfire, it might be a leaking or burnt exhaust valve, which would require the head being removed and repaired, a $500-700 job. You might just need a good tuneup with new plugs and plug wires, or it might be a fuel injector that is not working causing a dead miss. The best way to proceed it to have a compression test done, since you have a 4.3 it is not a major job and it will tell you alot about the condition of the engine and how to solve this. You did not say if you have a check engine light, but if you do get the engine computer read and post the codes for additional help.

I was driving my 2000 Durango and it made a loud pop then started jerking when I step on or off the gas

Was this an isolated incident or a recurring problem? A universal joint comes to mind or maybe a motor mount.

Backfire, from tail pipe, every 2 seconds

sounds like the timing belt has jumped a tooth or two and is causing pre- ignition in the combustion chamber of the cylinder head. Have timing belt alignment marks checked.

LOUD backfiring/ popping

Things that cause this are usually carburetor problems....sometimes the fuel/air mix is off and the timing too.

What have you done so far to the engine that coould be related to either of these?
