1978 Datsun/Nissan 280Z 2 2, 6-Cyl in-line: Cold starts easily. Runs fine. After a run of a few miles, and parked, with engine off, will not restart for at least 30 minutes or so.(Cranks over, but will not start engine)) If hood is left open, cooling down, then Restarts sooner and runs rough (spitting, faltering...) then smooths out fine. Coolant temerature runs just a little high, 185-190? Possible; coil fails when hot, or is running too rich f0r ahiot engine? Fuel injected Engine.

Replace the Ignition Control Module located on the side of the distributor. It is just about the size of your palm. However it's a pricey little bugger...

Probably same. Datsuns are famous for keeping the same carburetors (and other parts, as well) with only minor year to year modifications. My '79 Datsun pickup 620, right now has a carb from a '73 Datsun 620 parts truck, runs okay-for a hitachi.
Check ebay for new, remanufactured, or used- pretty sure they would have a lot of carbs for your car. The best place to buy new or remanned carburetors, especially for our older datsuns, is Very nicely planned (and huge!)catalog, too, with easy access.
Don't know about your 280Z, but with the 620's 2.0Liter engine(L20B), weber carburetors are all the rage now for them. They are excellent carburetors and very reliable, even claim to increase mileage over stock, but for $250, I guess I'll have to motor on with the old hitachi a bit longer.

I am not getting any fuel to the engine. The fuel pump could be bad or there is not any electricity going to the fuel pump..Is there a fuse to the fuel pump on a 1978 datsun 280Z?

No dont think so as the pump is fitted to the engine isent it
if not and there is no pump on engine or on eletric one under the bonnet then it must be in the tank .
(But in 78 they were on engine)
Find pump in elect pump put feed wire to pump and it should (tick) if Man pump then take off and get recoed.

Vehicle Just will Cut off when driving.

There are two computers under teh dash of the drivers side, one is the CECU (main computer) and the other above it is the fuel injection computer.

I am having the same problem. Did replacing the ignition power transistor on coil or the crank angle sensor on the distributor fix your problem?

You can start the car and use a hair dryer to blow some hot air on different components to see if it will fail.

Here is a factory service manual for reference:

Hope this helps!

I have a 1978 datsun 280z and it wont turn over at

Try tapping your starter motor and solenoid gently with a hammer. If the brushes or contacts are worn out this will give you a few more starts. Remember to only tap on s solid part and stay well clear of the electrical connections or you will damage something. If that doesn't work you have to start troubleshooting by testing for a voltage on the solenoid when you turn the key on to the start position and work back from there.

Check the condition of the fuel pump relay. It is located under the bracket in front of the battery that has the fuseable links attached to it. You will have to take the fuseable link holders off and remove the 2 bolts on top and the 2 on the bottom that hold the bracket to the inner fender. You will also have to take the fusable link holders off the side of the bracket cover that is next to the battery. Once you have done all that you can pull the bracket back, remove the 3 screws that hold the plastic cover on the battery side of the bracket and remove the plastic cover. Now you can unplug the connectors from the 4 relays located inside the bracket and pull the bracket with the relays inside out of the car so you can take it to the work bench. Two of the relays are the same relays. One is the ignition relay that sets between 2 other relays. The other relay by itself next to the big fuel pump control relay id the fuel pump relay. If your fuel pump goes bad and draws too much current it will burn the contacts on the fule pump relay. You can uncrimp the relay housing and pull the cover off. If the contacts are burned black you found the problem. The pump caused the relay to go bad so they both need to be replaced. If you have allready replaced the pump you are halfway to getting your 1978 280Z coupe running again. If the relay plastic base is not melted and the coil winding are not burnt black you can sand down the silver relay contacts and recondition the relay but I would prefer to replace it.
