The Grand Cherokee has been a well-proven SUV since it's introduction in 1993...many improvements have been included since the first model...The Laredo is usually the sporty version...just under the Luxury trimmed Limited. Parts and service are available everywhere...a great plus when Chrysler purchased Jeep a few years back too. They do hold value well, but the best bet to compare purchase price now would be to contact your Bank for Loan Value figures on the 2001 with 88,000 miles. The rule of thumb is if you can purchase the Jeep for the Loan Value amount...it is a great Deal. Also you can look on-line for other similar Jeeps and see what they are selling for. At 88,000 miles some wear items may need attention...ie struts, brakes, tires, tune up parts...fule and all filter changes...Ask to see a service record if possible to see what repairs have been needed...ie carfax info on certain repairs...The Grand Cherokee is worth checking out. A great car for single, or Family...Hope this helps...:)

I can't make financial decisions for you but if you want to do the work yourself, you can usually get a scrapyard engine for under $1,000. If you can hear it run before you buy it that's a plus. I generally take engines from vehicles that have been hit in the rear etc, never from one that looks clean...reason is that a clean body tells me there probably were other mechanical problems that prompted the owner to scrap it. The "accident victim" may have been running perfectly and would still have been on the road if it hadn't been hit. If you are using a good local shop, you may use up the entire 2K after you factor in labor, fluids etc into the job cost
As a rule, you never recover what you put into a vehicle when selling it unless you got it free, especially since most of what you have done is "normal" repair work except for the expensive tires.
Good luck!!

All wheel drive v8 issues 96 Jeep Grnd Cherokee Ltd

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.
Good luck!
