Question about 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche
More than likely the selenoid that does the shifting is stuck or inoperable. There are several things that have to happen to make this shift and 2 of them are electrical. The other is to make sure the truck is in nuetral and stopped before trying to switch in or out of 4 wheel low. Have him try to shift both with the foot on the brake pedal and if that doesn't work try it with the foot off the pedal as long as the truck is in nuetral and not moving. If this does not free it, then the selenoid may be gummed up and stuck, In some cases just driving it on a bumpy road can free it up after it is good and warm. Other wise I would have him check for any wires than may have came loose in the transfer case. Also rocking back and forth can cause the selenoid to unstick. If nothing works then he might have to get it serviced. If the 4 wheel drive is not used for a while they sometimes get gummed up and then stick. The other thing that can go bad is the transfer motor, which is an electric motor before the transmission, which is responsible for sliding into 4WD. This has to be repaired by a shop.
Good luck and have him keep trying it is possible it will free itself and shift into 2 wheel. Has he tried 4 wheel high? he can still get home that way just uses more gas.
