Question about Land Rover Discovery

1 Answer

There is a huge coolant leaking in the back of the engine. By now is only water! I tried to look for the leak with a mirror and a flash light but I just can't see it! the leak drops into the (passenger side of) transmition. Even if the car is stop and I refilled the radiator, while filling it you can see the leak from the back. What can it be? Landrover Discovery II 2000 with 108,000 miles. I spend $3,000 five and a half years ago to replaced the head gaskets Help!!

You do not say, but if this is the V8 petrol engine, you probably have a leak at the valley gasket. After 5+ years, this is entirely possible.
Alternatively it may be a failed heater hose.

My 2001 Pontiac Montana is leaking coolant. It's dripping down between the oil drain plug and the transaxle fluid pan. I can't see where exactly it is coming from. I've checked the water pump, radiato

Any where back there is a head gasket leak, unless it is at the very front of the engine(passenger side). Then it could be the timing chain cover. Use a mirror and bright light, You can find it.

Our temperature gauge goes from a blue light to a flashing red. after putting more coolant in, it seems to correct the issue for a little bit then it happens again. Why is this light going on?

The blue light is only supposed to indicate low engine temperature, reminding you to go easy on the engine until the light goes out.
The flashing is either for low coolant or for overheating, and it sounds like you are having a low coolant problem.
If after you add coolant the lights comes back, you have a coolant leak. The most common place for a leak is the coolant flange on the end of the cylinder head. If you take the engine cover off and look at the area where the transmission meets the engine, you should see either pink coolant puddling or pink crusty residue.
It's also possible to have other leaks from the radiator, heater core, water pump, etc. The nice thing is that with the pink coolant it will leave a trace of pink residue leading to the leak if you take a good look around with a flashlight.

Antifreeze on driveway. How do I find leak? How do I refill?

to find coolant leak the coolant system needs to be under pressure.remove radiator cap ,located on top of radiator.caution engine must be cool.refill with 1/2 antifreeze ,1/2 water solution only..put radiator cap back on and let engine warm for 5 minutes.turn off engine and inspect where coolant is leaking. you can purchase a telescopic mirror at the parts store to look into places that are hard to see.to locate leak.warm engine should provide enough pressure to locate the problem

need to perform a coolant pressure test. fill the reservoir and after the engine cools down fill the radiator, next start the engine and wait till the coolant system builds pressure then turn off the engine and using a mirror and flash light look for a leak.check water pump, hoses, radiator tanks for cracks, intake gasket at the corners espesically at the back next to the trans.also pull the carpet back and check for coolant leaking from the heater core, and last remove the sparkplugs and check for leaking head gaskets.hope this helped.

If its leaking at the rear its probably not the pump, the pump is in the front. It could be the rear of the intake manifold gasket.Or a heater hose that routed over the rear of your engine. Someone really needs to see where the fluid leaking out to make the call. Try to get a good strong flash light on the leak.Maybe even try lay on you back and slideing under with the light and look up the back side of your engine while its leaking. Engine in park of course. Eye protection needed here. Lay off to the side and look up at an angle so you dont get the coolant on your face or skin. Wash well if you get wet.

A leak under the water pump? Just put new water pump in and did not fix the problem.

When you replace the water pump you have to loosen the bolts that also go though the timing chain cover. This have to be removed and the gasket behind it replaced as well as two water pump gaskets. Check all your clamps (best to use new ones) first, but you may be having gasket problems between the pump, pump backing plate, timing chain cover and engine block.

Overheating

Hi,
If the car is overheating it could be due to a thermostat which is stuck in the closed position, a failed water pump or just a slack belt driving it. I think there will be a "little" tube carrying coolant from the engine to the coolant expansion tank, and if you run the engine with the filler cap removed you should see water coming through that pipe IF the rump is running. A failed water pump will not necessarily leak, it just won't pump the water round the engine.

Always take care when dealing with a pressurised cooling system on an overheating engine - the water may well be above boiling point.

If you run the engine without coolant the cylinder head may well warp and repair bill will be huge.

Hope this helps you a bit. D
