Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. This is not normal. It is possible that you need to adjust the idle, but since it happens when it is cold, I would lean to other things. It may be a map sensor or idle control sensor. It is weird because I am guessing it only does it when it is cold. It is possible that you have an electrical issue. Your best bet is trying to get a code off your computer, if possible. By doing this, it will eliminate the guess work, if your check engine light is on. Check to make sure the throttle is not sticking when you first start the car. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for using FixYa.

Subaru impreza sport 1999 piston slap

Rebuilding the engine is the only true cure. Be sure that the engine warms up without driving it. In other words, don't put any excessive load on the engine while it is cold. Once it warms up, the piston, rings, pins, etc. will expand from the heat. This is why you only hear slapping when the engine is cold.

2006 Subaru Impreza. Oil warning light stays on dimly when starting from cold but fades as engine warms up to normal running temperature. I did an oil and filter change about 2 weeks ago. Oil level on...

No, just keep an eye on it to see it does not start staying on longer and longer. The oil pressure sensor my be a little off,and at worse the oil pump is a little weak. Just keep up on the oil changes.3500 miles max.

1998 Impreza 2.0 non turbo wont idle properly

Lots of things it could be. Egr valve sticking, a hose that came off, a bad sensor for airflow, or even throttle position sensor.

Intermittent nature seems to point to something sticky or loose.

Jump starting a car with an immobiliser

use another vehicle and start by connecting the jump leads from the negative on one battery to the negative on the other and do the same with the positive, the positive is the one with the cross or the red wires. dont worry if u get a little spark when connecting the jump leads its perfically normal, then simply start the other vehicle up and leave it running for aruond 5 minuates then try starting your can.(you may need to rev the other car up a bit to raise the power being transfered) be very careful not to put the jump leads on the wrong terminals.
i hope this advice helps u,
