The column comes out very easy. Remove the bottom of the dash panel just under the column ( four screws ) then you can get to the four bolts holding up the column. This will allow it to drop down so that you can unplug the wiring from it. Follow the column to the fiire wall and remove the four bolts around it, freeing it from the fire wall. Now go under the hood and look for the joining bolt that connects the column to the steering shaft. It's only one bolt that goes through the center on the shaft and is up by the fire wall. Remove the nut and pull out the bolt. After you do this you can go back in the cab and pull the steering column out of the truck. Just reverse the process to put in the new one.

Steering column is very loose; so do I replace it or can it be repaired without removing it? Where can I see the photos or diagrams of the steering column?

Would help to know what column. Is it the old round column???
Is it tilt and is it moving about where it tilts?
If yes, the column can stay in the vehicle. You will need some specific tools to do this. Amoung other tools you need, a steering wheel puller, Lock plate tool, possiby male torx bits/drivers (depending on year), for certain torx female socket and a tilt pin removal tool.

And it is somewhat a complex job for someone that has not done it before.

My steering wheel has lots of play up and down , side to side i removed steering wheel i'm stuck on how to get the rest apart to tighten bolts in steering column

you're best to remove the entire column and do it in the bench, if you can get a diagram it will help a lot, assembilng a steering column is tricky, some parts are spring loaded and others only assemble in in the proper order, you got the steering column out, now you will need a tool to depress the lock plate, remove the c clip and the plate, then remove the signal arm and fourway button, remove the signal switch plate remember how everything came out,you should be able to remove the steerin shafe and get at the four bolts holding the tilt mechanism, four reverse torx bolts, reassemble and install, good luck

I have a 1981 Corvette with tilt steering wheel. The steering wheel has started flopping like something is loose in the steering column. Whats going on? Thanks Jim

You must remove the steering cowl below the steering wheel and see what is loose, broken or worn. It more likely to be a loose bolt, in which case just tighten it and refit the cowl.
Hope that helps

Steering column very loose need diagram to see where to look for the problem the steering wheel is very wobble from the tilt part up to the wheel itself. need to see if bolts are broken in it or does the...

This problem is very common, your best bet is to go to the nearest junk yard and look for a new column. The amount of work needed to try to get into that u joint isn't worth it and matching up the u joint at your local parts store can be a nightmare. Swapping out the column is a twenty minute job. I grabbed a column from a GMC and just swapped the horn button from my chevy, you'd never know it wasn't orginal.
