Hi, if there is no clicking at all, the problem is usually the safety interlock or the starter relay. First, check the 40 amp crank/start fuse to make sure the power is available. Then try starting in neutral or put your foot on the brake and shift thru the gears while holding the key to start. If the interlock is maladjusted, the engine should crank. If this doesn't work, pull out the styarter relay and probe the relay socket with a 12 volt test light. Connect the test light clip to engine ground and probe the socket. There should be one hot terminal with the ignition off (from the start/crank fuse) and 2 hot terminals with the key turned to start (from ignition switch). Next, move the test light clip to battery positive and probe the socket again. With the key turned to start, there should be one terminal that lights the light brightly (interlock signal) and one that lights it dimly (starter solenoid). The outcome of these tests will point to the problem. Please let me know the outcome of these tests if you have not solved the problem by the point of finishing them.

Under the hood check the black main fuse and relay panel, lift the cover off, check the starter relay ,make sure it's plugged in good, remove it and replace it to insure it's making connection. turn your headlights on and then while the headlights are on,turn key switch to start,do the headlights dim? if not, then the starters not drawing current, which makes the starter turn. so check for a bad starter.but before you replace the starter, shift the shifter lever back and forth to drive and to park, any loose shifting? if so,check linkage to the transmission for loose cable linkage. thank you for choosing fixya.com

I have a 2008 Mazda tribute when I put the key in and turn it it lights up as normal but when I turn it to crank it nothing happens... In the pass I would put the key in while turning it and it would crank...

It could be any of several things. I would start out with some basic testing. Battery good? If yes, then ignition switch. When you turn the key, it makes a connection from the key switch to the solenoid. Check with a test light at the switch and at the solenoid (on top of the starter). If no light at the started, try running a wire from the battery to the solenoid. Does it click/turn over? If no, then maybe starter. .

It's rather like a chain. If all the links are good, then it will start. If any of the links are broken, then it won't. Sometimes a "click" can help you identify where that chain is broken.

Possible causes are the starter, starter solenoid, battery, battery cables, neutral safety switch, and ignition switch.
The starter is mounted on the engine where the engine and transmission connect.
A mechanic would check the small wire on the solenoid for voltage when you turn the key to start.

When I try to start my '05 tribute it just clicks sporadically and the lights go crazy.

First check your battery connections. Take the cables off and clean them witha wire brush or sandpaper. Hook them back up and retry to start. If it starts fine if not check the battery itself. Check the ground cable at both ends. If still no start check the starter and the starter soldnoid.

check the battery connections on the ground side9black wire) make sure the connections are tight and clean. Check the positive wire and make sure the battery cable is clean and tight and no frays or nicks on either wire. Clean the positive wire on the starter . May be a starter relay or solinoid stuck or the starter has a dead spot in the starter windings. make sure the starter is tight to the engine block too.

I have a 2005 Tribute with what I thiink is a bad starter?

It could be but I'd be more suspicious of the battery and cables. Check the battery to see if it's fully charged,it should be in the area of 12-13.5 volts. Take the terminal ends off the battery and clean them up with a little emery cloth and reinstall, making sure they are tight. Do the same down at the starter, and see if this makes your problem go away first.
If the battery is low your charging system may be going bad and should be checked to see what your alternator is putting out, it should be 12.5-14,5 volts. Hope this helps.

Electricall problem w/2002 V6 mazda tribute

When that light comes on, it is indicating charging system problem which could mean alternator not charging for one reason or another like loose belt, faulty alternator, or yes, bad battery or connection at battery, for example. First & easiest thing to do is check all your connections to battery, which you've probably done, and make sure they're tight & clean. Make sure belt driving alternator is good & tight, and in good shape. Now boost the vehicle to get it going & test voltage at battery, after you take cables off. My guess is in your case, the voltage will begin to go down, indicating a bad alternator, that will need to be replaced.
