Depending on how old the vehicle is,it may be a bad modulator valve on the transmission,or just a clogged vacum line to the modulator valve on the transmission. please be specific with year, make and model, but i gave you diagnostic for 89 trhu 99 for most models anyway, research what year, make model of your vehicle.some want to blow smoke and say bad electrical your research 1st beause transmission shops are gonna say replace the transmission to replace the issue. beware the trans shops that use 'god' for logo.some are great, others are ****. ask for a list of customers, and stand in line at those shops for disgruntled your research, angie's is one way of finding out who does great work. wish you the best.

Can i drive in other gears on the highway besides being in drive...I have a 99 Lincoln continental? ?

you should use the highest gear possible to allow over drive to kick in, other gears will slow and limit the speed you can drive ,and stress the tranny

What is wrong with my car when it jerks in drive

jerks when?

moving the shift lever. with hand?

moving car. in gear, name the gear, drive, L or reverse?

jerks from, 1 to 2nd gear, 2nd to 3? or ? (or when IT down shifts)

pretend we are blind (we are) and cant drive car,(hopeless) and

tell us exactly what works and dont work driving.

hot /cold engine, fast /slow/ accelerating/ decelerating, up hills and what gears.

if engine is hot, is your idle at 800 RPM parked, in park.

if not the idle controls are out of control and when you shift to drive

IT will jerk. this is an engine problem.

there are lots of other symptoms.

Why the sudden jerking?

Fuel filter clogged and or impurities in the fuel system.faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs.Fault in fuel electrical system.Defective spark plug wires. Faulty emission system components.Vacuum leaks at the throttle body intake manifold or vacuum hoses. I would first look at the fuel inline filters it sounds like this is the likely problem.

2002 Honda Accord - slow engine start and jerking

Most likely a dirty idle speed control system follow the guidelines below to clean it.

Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.
