Question about 2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

When driving, the turbo shuts down and I lose power. After shutting the car off for 15-20 minutes, the turbo resets and works again. Sometimes it will work for a few days, other times it may only work for a few minutes.\r\nMechanic cannot find any codes. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a suggestion?

Check the spark plugs, I have seen several VW turbos with this problem. The aluminum heads expand and contract to fast and crack the porcelain on the plug causing the engine to misfire when the turbo spools up and makes boost. The misfire drops the engine and trans into a "safe mode" where it loses power.

Oh wow, my apologies. With the TDI check that your boost pressure sensor is functioning properly. It effects the fuel rate and vane position for the turbo and if its not giving a strong signal can cause these conditions.

Why does my 2003 pontiac sunfire lose all power while driving

That can be the symptom of a bad Ignition Control Module, or also a bad crank position sensor. The ICM can be taken off and tested for free at any parts store. The crank sensor circuit can be tested on the car with a multi-meter. Also small motors (like a fuel pump motor) that are starting to fail can sometimes work until they get hot and then stop working until they cool down again.

Next time the car shuts down and won't restart, check for spark on a spark plug wire with the engine cranking over. If you have no spark, suspect the ignition control module or the crank position sensor. If you still have spark, but won't start, check if the fuel pump is putting gas up to the engine.

Problem with Polo 1.4TDi turbo

Hi,
you need to get the codes read first this should give you fault codes if no codes check the vacumn pipes for splits etc and read the live data for the mass air flow sensor,it will either be an over boost problem or low reading MAF sensor causing the turbo to shut down all you do by ignition off and then on is reset untill it see`s the fault again.

Car loses power when it gets to about 80Mph

the boost controller works by vaccum pressure on some turbo engines and if it loses vaccum to the controller it dumps all turbo pressure out exhaust instead of intake. I would check that if it were me. It could be the mass air flow though it is located in the breather tubing somewhere between filter and the intake manifold.
