Question about 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS that seems to run great usually, but will periodically die while driving and may or may not start right away. It will also sometimes not start for up to a half-hour, cranking and making noise but not firing up. Then all of the sudden it will fire up no problem. Twice I just left it alone for like an hour and came back and fired right up like it didn't know there was ever a problem. I have an EGR out of range code, but I am wondering if this isn't something to do with the ignition cylinder or keys position since it seems so moody. Then again... why would it die while I am driving since I am not adjusting the keys?? AHHH! Please help me.

Check the connector on the crankshaft sensor, you have classic symptoms of either a failing crank sensor or, more likely, a dirty/bad connector or harness.

The fuel filter is located in the pressure line that runs from the fuel tank to the engine, near to the fuel tank.
Keep the engine off for few hours before replacing the filter, to get rid of some pressure in the lines.

The ck engine light should not be ignored, what sensor was shown to be bad ? Have it scanned again and replace the sensor that is bad if it still runs rough you might want to consider a tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel and air filter's and clean the throttle body with some gumout. It could also be the IAC motor Idle Air Control. Good Luck

SOURCE: EGR Valve replacement and Check engine light

Error code will have to be cleared. The way that cars know when to turn on the check engine light is that there is a recurring error for "x" miles or time, as long as that error exists in it's memory most cars will continue displaying the check engine light.

Hi I have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS with 144,miles I was a mile away going over speed bumps the battery light came on car died I put it in N car sound like it was flooded put it in P same thing turned it

might be worth starting with a wiggle test if you don't have access to any diagnostics. engine running and as suggested, careful of moving parts just go round the engine bay giving the loom/wiring a wiggle to see if you can re-create the fault. Jon

My 2001 Monte Carlo ss won't stay running

I would need more information to give you a good answer. I need to know how long will it stay running a few seconds an hour what is it. I had a 2000 blazer that would start fine everyday and i would 10 minutes and it died sometimes i drove an hour and it died. I parked it and everytime i started it would run about 10-15 minutes and die. after it would die i would check fuel pressure which was good and spark. Well turns out there's no spark so i changed coil ,plugs, wires, rotor. I finally changed the crankshaft positioning sensor and that tuned out to be the problem so good luck.

If you are driving the car and it wont start after driving awhile. Do a wiggle on the CKP (crank position sensor) this sensor is located at the front main engine pulley, I am seeing a lot of loose male to female connection shut car off.

Does it sound like it runs out of gas? Or is it more like it looses ignition? Fuel filter might be pluged up. or Ignition madual maybe going bad.
