You must disconnect the computer from the distributor, there is a connector that carries the signal in the harness that goes to the connectors to the distributor, it is single wire plug, the wire color is Tan/Black, open up the tubing the wire harness runs in to find the connector, it is very near the distributor body on the engine. Once the wire is disconnected here is the timing procedure and timing spec for the 350 TBI engine.

Set timing under the following conditions:

  • Normal operating temperature.
  • Air cleaner installed.
  • A/C "OFF".
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in the harness close to the distributor. DO NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.
  • Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor.

Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 00(TDC) That is zero TDC

See diagrams of timing marks below.

  • Tighten hold down and recheck the timing.
  • Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector.
  • Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source. Fuses are marked "ECM".

Need firing order for 94 gmc 350 pu diagram dist and wires if possible thanks

For GMC 350 the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

The distributor rotor turns clockwise when viewed from above, so the spark plug wires would be installed in the same order as the firing order, beginning with #1.

To find which contact in side the distributor cap that the rotor is "pointing" to, use a ratchet on the center bolt of the crankshaft and turn the engine over by hand (clockwise direction only as viewed from the front of the engine looking towards the firewall) until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer aligns with the "0" mark on the timing cover (may also be indicated by a deep "V" cut into the timing mark indicator attached to the timing cover).

Normally, the rotor will either be "pointing" towards the firewall with a bit more emphasis towards the driver's side cylinder bank, or it will be pointing towards the front of the passenger side front fender. If it is pointing towards the fender, turn the engine over again until the timing marks align and the rotor should be pointing towards the firewall as described above.

Find the closest terminal in the distributor cap that matches the rotor's alignment and install the #1 wire. The distributor cap and then be installed with the remaining wires installed around it clockwise from #1 using the firing order.

Some turning of the distributor may be necessary to get the engine statred. Once it does start, use a timing light to set the timing.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

Were is the connector to disconnect for ignition timing 89 gmc sierra

You have to disconnect the brown wire thats on the firewall. It disables the computer controlled advance and allows you to set the base timing. Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in harness close to distributor. DO NOT disconnect 4 wire connector at distributor.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck, set timing is O".

Please show me the position of the #1 spark plug wire on the 95 350's distributor

If you are talking about a 350 Chevrolet (GM) engine, the #1 plug is at the drivers side front. To find the position on the cap, turn the engine 'till the timing mark on the lower pulley points to 0 on the scale, then check rotor position in the distributor. If it's pointing towards the firewall, make one more turn. The firing order goes in the direction the rotor turns when cranking the engine over. 18436572.

I am trying to check my timing for a 1989 f-150 with a 351w with fuel injection. i have an induction timing gun but i dont know what part of the computer i am supposed to disconnect . There is no vacumm...

First clean the balancer and find the timing mark, mark it clearly with a chalk ,or crayon, or liquid paper, 10 degrees BTDC. Get the engine warm, now remove the timing connector ( Its a little gray plastic connector near the distributor, its 2 pins) disconnect that , then start the engine and set the timing. Tighten the distributor, Check it again, if ok, turn eng off and reconnect the timing connector. you are done.

In what order do yu arrange the plug wires on the distributor cap or a 1990 gmc 350

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Distributor turns clockwise Number one should be in the 5 oclock position. You should be able to draw an imaginary straight line between the coil tower and number one tower on the cap and the number one spark plug.

How do you set the timing on a 350 chevy engine in a 1995 G20 van?

If the distributor hasn't been taken out, the timing can be set manually but you have to disconnect the distributor wire behind the glove box inside the cab. Tan wire with white tracer it is taped up to the a multi wire harness but is the only one with a single plug. Disconect the plug and use your timing light on the timing mark to set timing per specs. Rotate the distributor as needed to advance or retartd as required for the correct setting. tighten the dizzy clamp and plug the tan wire back together. The computer will now be fooled asd to what the base timing is and advance from there.
Contrary to popular belief, 96' and up do not have this wire. Timing has to be done with a programmable scanner.

Hope this helps.
