Question about 1998 Ford Ranger SuperCab

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger that when I start it up runs a little rough for about 2 minutes then has a good smooth idle. When I step on the gas there is no power like it wants to stall. It only goes to a certain rpm not much more than idle. I put a new fuel filter in but does the same thing. It was running just fine and had no problems with it until now. It has the 2.5 four cylinder engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. Thank you for your help. Dan

A possibility:

I have a 1998 Mazda B2500 (same truck/engine/trans). A few years back, I was getting a rough idle a few minutes after startup, and my tachometer would fluctuate wildly. This progressed to the point where I was stalling out randomly while driving. With the help of my local mechanic, I ended up diagnosing it as a mass airflow sensor error. My best guess is that oil or water had gotten into the intake. Whatever the cause, after replacing the sensor (saw them for $60 on eBay, right after I paid $300), it's been running smoothly since.

P.S. -- I don't think this is a mileage/wear and tear issue so much as it is bad luck. I only had 13k miles on the truck at the time.

99 ford ranger, idles rough till it warms up,then runs good. Hard to start after it gets hot, it acts as if it is starved for fuel. Once it does crank it runs fine.

First thought: Check the idle air control valve, or whatever its Ford equivalent is. Sometimes these start to stick and cause the rough early idle that smooths out later.

I have a 1983 Ford ranger with a 2.3 4 cylinder, yesterday, after replacing a lot of parts, it finally was running great--no miss or rough idle. Until I revved up the engine. Then it started running...

Hello, If this is a push rod engine I had an identical problem with an engine in my 1988-1989 Jeep Wagoneer. It was a Buick V-8 and behaved exactly like your Ford engine.

On my engine it was weak valve springs. You could take your thumb and push on the valve spring while the engine idled and the engine would miss out. Turn it off and start it up and it would idle smoothly, rev it up and let off the gas and it would miss out and shake. You could also have hydraulic lifters (check your model) and they could behave like this. At idle the lifters would pump up, but the lifters may not refill fast enough to work the valves smoothly.

If you have hydraulic lifters they must be centered in their travel to pump correctly. Even if you have solid lifters the valve adjustment can affect engine performance.

My 1998 Ford Explorer runs rough under hard acceleration

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.

Rough idle and lack of power

Since you have fuel injection for fuel delivery, something has to tell the system how long to have the fuel injectors open, and something has to tell the system when to activate each fuel injector ... unless you have throttle body injection. Do you know which type of fuel injection you have? I will need that answer above before telling you anything useful.

98 ford ranger 4.0L runs very rough when mass air flow sensor is plugged in. runs, but still a little rough but drivable when unplugged. tried new sensor, still the same. any ideas?

did you try cleaning the idle control valve and the egr valve out with carb cleaner.try that before replacing any parts, also if there is any codes in the system those should also lead you in the right direction.
