Question about 1996 Ford Probe

1 Answer

This 96 Probe with a 2.0 keeps running rough, although it has spark and fuel. Replaced the distributor with a remanufactured distributor, and it runs a lot better than it did before. Timing is dead on, timing belt is lined up, catalytic converter is fine. Good fuel pressure, checked the MAF sensor, etc. No codes, current, pending or otherwise. I AM LOST!

Will Bad o 2 sensors cause my 1995 ford probe Gt to run rough?

yes, the o2 sensors send signals to the ecm, that controls the fuel pressure, distributor advance, etc.

no points on that model it uses a spark advance. if its running smooth while your driving it and only rough at a stop believe it or not they put out a bulletin about the motor mounts being bad for this condition

Running rough, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor

First thing you need to know is which cylinders are missing. Then, don't forget there is an engine beneath the electronics. Do a quick test with a vacuum gauge and do a compression test. Check the distributor shaft for side play. If everything checks out good, then do electronic component testing. have a code check run (many parts stores do this free) and get a chiltons or haynes manual and follow test procedures in there.
I refrain from giving repair suggestions with problems like yours because people keep changing instead of testing parts. When I work on my vehicles or other peoples cars, I do testing to avoid buying expensive parts that most times won't correct the problem. At this point the most I'd suggest is to clean the mass air flow sensor wires with a Q-tip and carb cleaner...that often helps and is free. If you run into a problem with whatever you find, ask and I'll try to help.
good luck

96 bravada replaced fuel still no start runs with starter fluid

If your getting gas and spark get an obd 2 scan tool and check your mass air flow sensor. I had the same problem. If your having a problem with this vehicle always check the computer first; it will save you tons of headaches later.

Replaced distributor and now the car runs rough

Check if your wires are in the right places. Had the same thing on mine and found I crossed 2 of the wires.

Ford probe won't start

distributor is placed wrong for timing
take cap off unbolt distributor lift enough to turn rotor place back dont bolt litely just enough to hold distributor down without it poping up on you
place cap back on
now you need manual start and kill switch up in engine compartment turn vehicle over with manual starter switch if runs rough turn distributor till sounds good now time it with radar gun tighten bolts the rest of the way

now for what i described this has a margin of error going 1 to 3 notches to time in either direction from front to back or back to front turning of the distributor rotar
i hope i had made some sense heree695f1c.jpg
or counter clockwise the lifting distributor and turning rotor one tooth to engine crank this is timeing
