Question about 2005 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

Hi, hope you can help! I own a Subaru Legacy 250T 95. Yesterday my girlfreind was driving and didnt spot the temprature gauge climbing. The car eventually siezed/nipped up, and she was forced to stop. It appears that the water pump sprung a leak and the coolant drained from the sytem causing the temprature to rise. Have just consulted a mechanic and he reckons the nipping up would have caused major damage to the soft alloy heads, and recommend i get a new/reconditioned engine. It runs fine, to the garage and back, now. Sounds and runs as before. Although not holding water. My question is; has anyone had this problem before and got away with minor internal damage or is the engine dead? Is it worth fixing the waterpump? Or am i going to find that in one month time the engine is using heaps of oil and is effectivly damaged, wasting the cash to fix the waterpump? I like the car and dont want to just throw it away. Any help very much appreciated. Mat Weir

Keep the car and repair the water pump! If it is running fine now it will continue to do so for years to come....Subaru's are like that--they almost heal themselves.....

If you haven't flushed in years, it was probably just overdue. Flush again to make sure you get it clean. Run the heater while flushing to get the heater core clean too. Make sure to get air out of the system after refilling (park uphill when filling). Then check again after a month or so to see if oil is somehow getting into the coolant. That would indicate a bad gasket or possibly a crack in the cylinder head.

Driveshaft is making noises

i presume that is a front wheel drive vehicle. you likely have a cv joint that is failing (constant velocitiy joint is the full name). if you raise the vehicle and turn the tire back and forth you should be able to tell which one is failing. rear wheel drives would likely need a universal joint replaced. replace both at the same time tho.

Engine overheat

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand it would appear that the radiator fan is not working. In some versions, either the A/C or the heater must be turned on for the radiator fan to work. In some other incidents, the fan utilizes a clutch. Common design makes use of the inverse property of silica oil to serve as the clutch. Still others have a relay that actually does the switching on of the fan. Of course it would be to your advantage to likewise check the temperature sensor on the radiator.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
