My Sonoma 4.3 v6 is having some issues the rpm gauge is jumping at any giving time besides idling would you know why and I couldn't run dynastics

tachos get their signal from the coil or the ignition control module or ECM
check for ;loose / broken wires in the harness or at connections
There will be no fault codes for tachs unless it affects an adjacent sensor
could be a faulty tacho unit (tacho--tachometer--rev gauge --rpm indicator )

Rpm does not drop below 1000

No,only on carburated engines it,idles down to the set point,on yours,it's fuel injected, pushing gas pedal won't kick idle down, should go down after a certain amount of time, does it automatically,If you start and drive a 5 mile ride and stop at a stop sign,it should idle at it's set point if there's no engine problems, which may be.5 to .7 on your tac. When you normally first start,it will idle between 1000 to 1200 rpm's,don't push on gas,let idle say 15 seconds, put in drive and go.

Can you tell if the engine speed increased ?
Something in the transmission could be slipping, or the tach could be faulty.

Defective tachometer and speedometer

Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one, with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected, the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter. Check EGR valve and sensor it might be carbon up or stuck and the sensor might be bad.
EGR valve and sensor connected to it control idle at start up.

Tach is short for tachometer and is a device that tells you the speed of the engine, generally in RPM X 1000. A typical speed for a 6 cylinder engine is about 600 to 1000 for idle in Park/Neutral, and 500-800 in Drive or Reverse. This was if you have this on your dash, and can get me some numbers, I can better assist you...accordianman
