Question about 1985 Mazda RX-7

How do you tell which is the pointer on the distributor that is supposed to point to the leading plug since there are 4 on the top and two on the bottom? Could it be the one on the bottom with the arrow?

Turn the ignition on and turn the body of the distributor until you see/hear a spark across the points. lock the distributor at this point (This should be just as the points open in the direction of rotation) fit the cap and fit the leads in the firing order.This will get the engine started and by the use of a timing light on no 1 cylinder lead you can set the timing exactly.

How to use a timing light and adjust timing


1. Make sure the engine is off and the key is removed from the ignition.

2. Clamp the red clip to the positive terminal of your car battery.

3. Clamp the black clip to the negative terminal of your car battery.

4. The larger clip with the thickest insulation goes on your #1 spark plug wire by attaching the clip around the wire that leads to your #1 spark plug.

5. Next, you will want to rotate the lower crankshaft pulley so that the timing marks are visible on the crankshaft pulley. Be aware that on some cars the timing marks are located somewhere else and you should consult either your owner's manual or dealership.

6. Your automobile specifications sheet should tell you what your timing degree should be. For example:

1969 Ford 429
6 Degrees BTDC @ 550 rpm in drive gear
Automatic Trans
Firing order: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

This means that you want to line up the pointer on the timing light with the 6° timing mark when the engine is idling in gear at 550 rpm. "BTDC" means Before Top Dead Center and "ATDC" means After Top Dead Center - top dead center is the point where the piston reaches the highest point in the cylinder and that is when the compression is the greatest.

The timing marks will have a line labeled "0" with marks above and below it, and depending on which way the wheel rotates, you will see the lines before the "0" (BTDC), or after the "0" (ATDC).

7. If you want, you can use some chalk to mark the timing marks to make them more visible. If there is a rubber hose on the side of the distributor, disconnect the rubber hose from the vacuum advance and put a plug in the end of the hose to seal it off temporarily.

8. Okay, now start up your engine, letting it warm up.

9. Take your timing light and aim it at the timing marks, pressing the button on the light. Because you have the light hooked up to your spark plug means that it has current passing through it every time your spark plug fires, making the light go on and off, creating a strobe effect. Because of this, the timing marks should appear to be standing still. Now, is the pointer pointing at the correct mark? If yes, you are all set, you do not need to adjust your timing. If it is not, you should adjust your timing.

10. Adjust the Timing by looking below the distributor, at the base of your distributor shaft, for a fastener called the distributor hold-down clamp. We want to loosen this fastener so the distributor can turn on the shaft. Grasp the vacuum advance and move it back and forth.

11. Rotate the distributor slightly, and then aim your timing light back at the timing marks again. How does it look? If it is farther away from the marks, then move the distributor in the opposite direction. Then, check again with your timing light. Continue doing this until the pointer is pointing at the correct degree point as required.

12. Once the timing is good, tighten the fastener for the distributor hold-down clamp, making sure you do not move the distributor. After tightening this fastener, double check your timing to ensure it is still correct.

13. Turn off your engine, remove the key from the ignition, and disconnect the timing light.

1990 geo storm sohc is running rough. Parts that are new: cap, rotor, plugs wires,plugs, pickup coil, and the ignition module looks brand new. The coil is old, but is still sending spark through all t


the timing is 180 degrees out so ignore where no 1 lead should be and rewire the HT leads to the new position for no1 cylinder. The crank timing mark should be on 10 degrees advanced. Engines are timed off the crank position so forget the cam position.
Or you can start again. Remove no 1 plug and turn the engine over until you feel compression under your finger over the plug hole. Set the timing on the crank to 10 degrees before tdc. Position the distributor so that the point of the star is directly opposite the exciter coil in the distributor. The rotor button should now be facing no 1 cylinder plug lead adjust the HT leads so that they will fire in the 1342 firing order. Start the engine and with a timing light attached to no 1 plug lead adjust the timing mark to specifications by turning the body of the distributor.

How do i set the distributor that runs counter clockwise


No different than setting one that turns clockwise. You set it in so the rotor on the distributor shaft lines up with the number 1 cylinder spark plug tower on the distributor cap, and then you follow the firing order around in a counter clockwise direction.
This will get the distributor set right, as long as you have the number one cylinder at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke before you drop the distributor in.
To find TDC of compression stroke, pull the number one spark plug. Turn the engine over by hand with a socket on the crank pulley-turn it clockwise-or you can have someone bump the starter over in short bursts. With your finger over the spark plug hole, turn the crank over until you feel air pressure build up in the cylinder. Now look at the timing pointer scale next to the crank pulley. Keep turning the crank until the notch or mark on the crank pulley lines up with the zero degrees mark on the pointer scale. The air pressure behind your finger tells you that you are on the compression stroke. When the crank pulley notch lines up, you are at TDC of the compression stroke. The piston will be at the top of its travel. Now you can drop in the distributor. Keep playing with it until you have the rotor pointing directly to the number 1 spark plug tower. The shaft will turn a little as it is dropped in, so you start with the rotor a little ways back from directly to number 1.

V6 engine: firing order: 1 2 3 4 5 6, distributor rotates clockwise. Left bank of engine (driver's side), cylinders 2, 4, 6 (#2 at front of engine). Right bank: 1, 3, 5 (#1 at front of engine).
Inline 6 engine: firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Distributor rotates clockwise.
The number one tower on the dist. cap should have a mark or numeral 1 on it. If not, turn crankshaft to top dead center of compression stroke on number one cylinder, the 0 degrees or "T" mark on the crank pulley pointer. If you are on the compression stroke (not the exhaust stroke), the rotor under the dist. cap will be pointing to the number one cylinder spark plug wire tower.

How can I check timing with a timing gun on a 99 Sportage


Check the timing specification of your engine, it could be from approx 5 to approx 10 degree BTDC (before top dead center). The timing marks are located on the crank shaft pulley with a pointer on the engine case.
Connect the timing light spark plug on to the number one spark plug and connect the power leads to the battery (make sure the red positive lead is connected to the + battery terminal and the black lead to the - battery terminal).
Loosen the distributor clamp if needed, start the engine, shine the timing light onto the crank shaft pulley and press the timing light trigger. The timing light will flash, adjust the distributor by rotating the distributor slightly or by the adjusting screw so the pointer above the crankshaft lines up with the specified timing mark on the pulley.
Turn off the engine and tighten the distributor clamp if necessary.

When installing a distributor on a 1985 nissian 720 pickup...do you have the rotor pointing to #1 intake or #1 exhaust on distributor?


With the valve cover off, turn the crank so the timing pointer is at 0. This is Top Dead Center. As you go past this point the exhaust valve should start to open. If it does then insert yout distributor so the rotor lines up with #1 plug location. If the intake starts to open, leave the distributor out and make 1 complete rotation of the crank until the pointer lines up to 0 again. As you go past TDC this time the exhaust should start to open. Now you can put your distributor in. The crankshaft makes 2 turns to every oine turn on the camshaft. Hope this helps.

I changed the distributor drive gear and i am trying to get the TDC firing position on my 1997 chevy astro van 4.3 and there is only one arrow on the block and two lines on the crank shaft how do get it to...


Hi, the procedure is pasted below. Ignore the timing marks and just verify you are at TDC of the compression stroke on the #1 piston. You can tell compression versus exhaust stroke by plugging the spark plug hole with your thumb while turning the crankshaft (there will be no pressure on the exhaust stroke).   1. Remove the No. 1 cylinder spark plug. Turn the engine using a socket wrench on the large bolt on the front of the crankshaft pulley. Place a finger near the No. 1 spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston reaches Top Dead Center (TDC). As the engine approaches TDC, you will feel air being expelled by the No. 1 cylinder. If the position is not being met, turn the engine another full turn (360 degree). Once the engine position is correct, install the spark plug.
  2. Align the cast arrow in the distributor housing, the driven gear roll pin and the pre-drilled indent hole in the distributor driven gear. If the driven gear is installed correctly, the dimple will be approximately 180° opposite the rotor segment when it is installed in the distributor.
    NOTE Installing the distributor 180° out of alignment, or locating the rotor in the wrong holes, may cause a no start condition or can cause premature engine damage and wear.
  3. Make sure the rotor is pointing to the cap hold-down mount nearest the flat side of the housing.
  4. Using a long screwdriver, align the oil pump drive shaft in the engine in the mating drive tab in the distributor.
  5. Install the distributor in the engine. Make sure the spark plug towers are perpendicular to the centerline of the engine.
  6. When the distributor is fully seated, the rotor segment should be aligned with the pointer cast in the distributor base. The pointer will have a -6'' cast into it indicating a 6 cylinder engine. If the rotor segment is not within a few degrees of the pointer, the distributor gear may be off a tooth or more. If this is the case repeat the process until the rotor aligns with the pointer.
  7. Install the cap and fasten the mounting screws.
  8. Tighten the distributor mounting bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  9. Engage the electrical connections and the spark plug wires.

I dont know how to put my spark plug wires in my car

  1. Insert each ignition wire on proper terminal of distributor cap . Ensure ignition wires are properly seated on the terminals. The No. 1 terminal is identified on distributor cap .
not sure if #1 cylinder is on the front right or front left. Call a dealer.

Installation
Before installing distributor , visually inspect distributor . Inspect the O-ring. It should fit tightly and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks and excessive wear. Rotate distributor drive shaft. It should move freely, without binding.
  1. To install distributor correctly, No. 1 piston (6108) must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug (12405) and rotate crankshaft (6303) clockwise until No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke.
  1. With No. 1 piston on compression stroke, align timing pointer with TDC on the crankshaft damper.
  1. Align locating boss on distributor rotor with hole on armature. Fully seat distributor rotor on distributor shaft.
  1. Rotate distributor shaft so blade on distributor rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base that was previously made in Step 2 of the Removal procedure.
  1. While installing, continue rotating distributor rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
  1. Rotate distributor in engine front cover to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify distributor rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base. If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in engine front cover , remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate distributor rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of camshaft gear. Repeat Step 1 if necessary.
  1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Tighten bolt, but leave it loose enough to rotate distributor .
  1. Install distributor cap , No. 1 spark plug and ignition wires. Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs . Tighten distributor cap hold-down screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Reconnect distributor to engine control sensor wiring .
  1. Set initial engine ignition timing according to procedures found in Section 8A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
  1. After engine ignition timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt on to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial engine ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
