If its goin thru that much oil then theres a major problem in leakage or internal engine wear--chec outside of motor for evidence--is car burnin blue smoke--use a 40 to 50 wt oil in the meantime

The northstar engines burn incredible amounts of oil....your owners manual will explain.....'oil consumption'....but the reality is keep checking it...the 'idiot light comes on...or info center...low oil when it is 2 quarts down....another of GM follies...i have a northstar Caddy too.....

What are 5 things???? The truck should hold 6 quarts. it really needsto be 5W30. It can be reset with the buttons on the steering wheel by dialing up OIL LIFE and then holding the reset button in until it shows 100%. the reset button looks like an backwards L with an arrow. 98 buick lesabre oil pressure dropped to 0 and engine died. added 1 quart oil, waited 30 minutes, started and drove 5 miles then oil pressure dropped to 0 and engine died. does this sound like a bad oil...

my sister had the same problem. There are 2 sensors that can cause this when they go bad. One is the oil pressure switch, which is located near the oil filter. When the PCM reads this switch, and gets a low reading, it will automatically kill the engine. The switch costs around $4.00 and is a 5 minute replacement job. The other possibility is that the crank position sensor has gone bad. When this sensor goes bad, the PCM can't read the appropriate speeds of the crankshaft, and will adjust the fuel and air mixture to compensate, often times the engine will die because it is getting insufficient fuel and air. The Crank position sensor is located on the engine block near the water pump. It is around $40.00 and at the most a 30 minute replacement job if you are unfamiliar with the process. I hope this helps. I'm a vehicle mechanic in the Air Force, with roughly 7 years of experience on the floor.

I JUST CHANGED THE OIL ON MY 2006 COBALT AND THE READ OUT STILL SHOWS 25% ,MY QUESTION IS HOW DO I RESET THIS .THANKS

Try this and if it does not work let me know.

1. Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position but do not start the engine.

2. Press the display button until the display reads "Oil Life"

3. Press the accelerator (gas) pedal all the way down and all the way back up 3 times within 5 seconds.

4. The oil life index should reset to 100 or the display will read "Oil Life Index Resetting", and when completed then turn off the ignition.

Start the vehicle and verify that the oil life has been reset, and if it did not reset then repeat the procedure, because sometimes it will take more than one try to clear and reset the oil life index.

If that does not work then try this procedure...

1. Press the fuel information button until ENGINE OIL LIFE appears on the Driver Information Center (DIC).

2. Press and hold the select button.

3. The engine oil life percentage will return to 100.

4. Turn the key to OFF.

5. If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset.
Repeat the procedure.

1997 Jeep Wrangler oil pressure gauge not working

The gage is working because it is coming on sometimes. The oil pressure sending unit on the engine is starting to go. I would replace the oil pressure switch on the engine first.

If your oil pressure dropped to 0, your engine would seize up within minutes. Most likely the problem is the oil pressure sending unit. A hundred bucks at any reputable shop should be able to take care of it for you.

Low Oil Pressure on 1992 Chevy 1500 Pickup Truck

Hi! The problem you are outlining is very similar to the Rover V8 (Buick engine). We Brit's are used to the low oil pressure when warm. I presume a complete oil change engine flushed with new replacement filter has been carried out? Maybe a top quality synthetic oil with additive may help. You may take it a little further and replace the oil pump with an after market performance up rated one. If you really are worried about low oil pressure damage whilst in low rev's try Molybnenum Disulphide an oil additive which really reduces friction metal to metal wear particulary in the situation you are describing.
That's the best I can suggest at this moment.
Good Luck! and Happy New Year!

1999 bravada oil

check for coolant in the oil. remove the oil fill cap and look for a white milky substance. most likely engine damage has already occured because to have that low if oil pressure there is too much "clearance" between the bearings and the components they work with-(crankshaft,camshaft,connectiong rods). that vehicle came with dexacool coolant and it would shorten the life of the intake gaskets. they then would leak into the engine ruining the bearings over time. the skip can happen from lifters hydrolocked with the oil/coolant solution. take it to a reputable mechanic for an analysis......Good luck.......Scott

Oil

Depends on the tempurate where you live,

see this link for some great info:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/visc.html

MOTOR OIL VISCOSITY RATINGS

Viscosity ratings for commonly used motor oils typically range from 0 up to 50. A "W" after the number stands for "Winter" grade oil, and represents the oil's viscosity at zero degrees F.
Low viscosity motor oils that pour easily at low temperatures typically have a "5W" or "10W" rating. There are also 15W and 20W grade motor oils.
Higher viscosity motor oils that are thicker and better suited for high temperature operation typically have an SAE 30, 40 or even 50 grade rating.
These numbers, by the way, are for "single" or "straight" weight oils. Such oils are no longer used in late model automotive engines but may be required for use in some vintage and antique engines. Straight SAE 30 oil is often specified for small air-cooled engines in lawnmowers, garden tractors, portable generators and gas-powered chain saws.

Basically for your car I would run 5W-30, this keeps you covered in warm and cold climates, 10w-30 is the best choice if you live in a climate with temperatures that never go below 0degre''s Farenheight.
