Question about Toyota Celica

Open Question

My 1987 (2.0 3SGE motor) Toyota Celica automatic transmission does not shift into overdrive. I noticed the transmission would take longer and longer to engage OD. At some point it would take 2-5 miles on the freeway at high rpm b4 finally engaging OD. Now OD doesn't engage at all. A transmission shop has looked at it. They believe it is an electrical problem. They've tested the solenoids and they are fine. They have (and I have on my own) done the on board diagnostics looking for error codes but there are no errors. I have the factory manual and one of the diagnostic steps is to disconnect the ECT computer and drive manually. If it drives then it's not a mechanical problem. I have and it drives fine. OD is there without slipping of gears or hesitation. I'd like to keep this car. What's the fix?

SOURCE: l95 esocort ,lost forward gears,

It is the transmission showing a fault. Your local transmission shop should do a free diagnostic check. Its more than likely a shift soloneid problem inside the valves

Sounds like you need the updated engine computer for harsh shifting. Look up under the glove box at the computer. Number should be 89661-02K21 if not, you need the update. It is an 8/80 warranty item.

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

SOURCE: The automatic transmission is stuck in 3 gear.

Definitely, there's a problem with your transmission. You are right, it is overheating. It is
caused by worn out part inside your transmission.
Have it checked by a qualified mechanic.

Where is the overdrive selenoid

You either have a transmission problem, or a gearbox problem. It has nothing to do with an overdrive button. Overdrive buttons are used mainly for towing in automatic vehicles, increasing the torque and lowering the RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) on an engine.

I just bought my son a 1999 Toyota Celica SX. During the gear change (between gear change), a strange noise coming from the engine/car as if some things are loose etc. I would greatly appreciate an expert...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Since this is a newly bought car, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid and motor oil. Motor oil is for security purposes, to remove sludge just in case.

Regarding the transmission fluid, the fluid may be burnt that's why it makes some noise. This is common when fluid is burnt or old. Once the fluid is replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

How to use the overdrive on the auto.transmission.

the overdrive button on your automatic transmission is for cruising on the highway basically like having another gear for better economy careful not to use it when your not on the highway because lugging the car in overdrive when its not needed will cause higher fuel consumption other than that you should have no problems just get out on the highway and push and away you go

Toyota's automatic overdrive is always electronically switchable; it could be the OD solenoid (in the transmission).

2002 Toyota Celica with a strange shifting problem.

Automatic transmission are complex systems. The shifting of gears is based on a number of things like bands, speed, acceleration, deceleration, manifold back pressure, RPMs, temperature, etc.
Sometimes the electrical ground connection for the transmission can become corroded which causes poor shifting.
Since you are getting an error code, you should get a readout for it. Many auto supply store like Advance Auto will loan a meter for you to get a readout. Call up some stores to find one.
