The distributor rotor is pointing toward #4 cyl. on the cap when i align the crank pulley marks and camshaft gear marks with #1 cyl on compression stroke, am I doing this right?

I took the distributor out of my 85 ranger w\out marking where the rotor was . I put all the timing marks wher theyr supposed to be and the distributor back in but it wont start now. What do i do

Pull #1 spark plug and bring that cylinder up (turn crank pulley) until air starts to blow out ( this is the compression stroke) and the timing mark on the front crank pulley is pointed at 0 top dead center TDC for short. Then reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointed towards the number 1 spark plug wire contact inside the distributor cap.

Need to know how to time and restab a distributor

Bring cyl #1 up to top dead on the compression stroke. Line up crank pulley timing mark up to zero on the timing indicator. Line up the rotor on the distributor to point to #1 on the rotor cap. Put distributor in slowly making sure you pick up the oil pump shaft while engaging the cam gear. If the oil pump shaft doesn't doesn't line up the distributor will not drop all the way in. Now but mount bolt back in but do not tighten. Hook up timing lite, start engine and move distributor to line up the correct timing mark then tighten distributor mount bolt.

To Remove
  • Disconnect the distributor wiring connector and the vacuum advance hose, if the vehicle is so equipped.
  • Remove the distributor cap and note the position of the rotor. Mark the position on the distributor housing.
  • On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the spark plug wires from the cap prior to cap removal.
  • Note the position of the vacuum advance, then remove the distributor holddown bolt and clamp.
  • Pull the distributor from the engine. Most distributors will need to be twisted as they are pulled out of their bore.
  • Once the distributor is removed, install a shop towel in the distributor opening to keep foreign material out of the engine block.
  • The entire assembly should be cleaned thoroughly. Make sure all solvent residue is completely removed.
Installing and Timing a Distributor
The following procedure may be followed to install the distributor and time it to the engine, if all reference marks were made during the removal of the distributor:
  • Lubricate the O-ring on the distributor shaft.
  • Position the rotor so that it is aligned with the mark made on the distributor housing prior to removal.
  • Align the distributor housing with the mark made on the engine block during removal.
  • Lower the distributor into the engine block, making sure the distributor drive is fully seated.
  • Distributors equipped with a helical drive gear will rotate at the distributor is being installed, causing the distributor to move away from the reference marks.
  • Pay attention to how much the rotor moves.
  • Remove the distributor and move the rotor backward the same amount. This should allow the shaft to rotate while the distributor is being installed and still be aligned with the reference marks.
  • Make sure the distributor housing is fully seated against the engine block. Sometimes it may be necessary to wiggle or rock the distributor to seat it fully into the drive gear.
  • Distributors with drive lugs must be mated with the drive grooves in the camshaft. Both are offset to eliminate the possibility of installing a distributor 180 degrees out of time.

  • Rotate the distributor a small amount so the timer core teeth and pick-up teeth are aligned.
  • Install the distributor holddown clamp and bolt, leaving the bolt slightly loose.
  • Install the spark plug wires in the direction of distributor shaft rotation and in the cylinder firing order.
  • Connect the distributor wiring connectors. The vacuum advance hose is usually left disconnected until the timing is set with the engine running.
If the engine has been cranked while the distributor is removed, or no marks were made during removal, use this procedure to reinstall the distributor:
To be sure that the number one cylinder is on its compression stroke, observe the rocker arms to see that they are both moving. Then, rotate the crankshaft one revolution until the rocker arms for the companion to cylinder number one are both moving at TDC (top dead center). Align the timing mark and install the distributor with its rotor pointing to the number one spark plug cable in the distributor cap.

  • Remove the spark plug from cylinder #1. Install a test plug in the end of the spark plug wire and position the test plug away from you and cylinder #1.

  • Place your thumb over the bore for the spark plug and crank the engine until compression is felt.

  • Lightly crank the engine while observing the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley. Once the timing marks are aligned, stop cranking.

Firing order in 1500cc motor

#1 plug is closest to the front. Take off distributor cap. Remove #1 plug. You want to crank engine until #1 cylinder is on compression stroke. Watch to see direction the distributor rotor is turning. As the compression stroke starts then bring the engine to top dead center by aligning timing mark on crak shaft pulley with pointer. The #1 plug wire goes in the distributor cap hole the rotor is pointing. The #2 wire in the next hole following the direction the rotor turned. Then the #4 wire and finally #3. Firing order 1-2-4-3.

Installation of wires
  1. Whenever a high tension wire is removed for any reason from a spark plug, coil or distributor cap, or a new high tension wire is installed, Silicone Dielectric Compound WA-10, D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent must be applied to boot before it is reconnected. Using a small clean tool, coat entire interior surface of boot with Silicone Dielectric Compound WA-10, D7AZ-19A331-A (ESE-M1C171-A) or equivalent.
  1. Insert each wire on proper terminal of distributor cap. Ensure wires are all the way down over their terminals. The No. 1 terminal is identified on cap. Install wires starting with No. 1 terminal.
  1. Remove wire retaining brackets from old high tension wire set and install them on new set in same relative position. Install wires in brackets on valve rocker arm covers.
  1. Connect wires to proper spark plugs.
  1. Install coil wire.


Installation of distributor
Before installing distributor, visually inspect distributor. Inspect O-ring. It should fit tightly and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks and excessive wear. Rotate distributor drive shaft. It should move freely, without binding.
  1. To install distributor correctly, No. 1 piston must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug and rotate engine clockwise until No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke.
  1. With No. 1 piston on compression stroke, align timing pointer with TDC on the crankshaft damper.
  1. Align locating boss on rotor with hole on armature. Fully seat rotor on distributor shaft.
  1. Rotate distributor shaft so blade on rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base, that was previously made in Step 2 of the Removal procedure.
  1. While installing distributor, continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
  1. Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base. If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of camshaft gear. Repeat Step 1 if necessary.
  1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Tighten bolt, but leave it loose enough to rotate distributor.
  1. Install distributor cap, No. 1 spark plug and ignition wires. Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the cap and spark plugs. Tighten distributor cap hold-down screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Reconnect distributor to wiring harness.
  1. Set initial timing according to procedures found in Section 13A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual .
  1. After timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 23-34 Nm (17-25 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial timing. Adjust if necessary.

I need to know how to set my cam in time so my car will start


to begin with timing a camshaft, the motor needs to be set at top dead center of the compression stroke. If you are unsure what this means, remove the valve cover on the driver side, rotate the crank pulley with a 32 mm socket, until you see the intake valve, which is the second valve spring, begin to compress. When I say compress, this means the valve spring is opening the valve. As the valve spring begins to close, the piston will be approaching the top of its travel. The crank shaft pulley/harmonic balancer, will have a mark to indicate top dead center on the timing cover. This Mark will align with the TDC mark on the timing cover just after the intake valve spring closes. Next, using a half inch wrench, remove the distributor and set to the side. With a flashlight, look down inside at the oil pump driveshaft. It will have a slot in the center of the gear. This slot should be pointing towards the number one intake manifold bolt hole. It will almost be front to back.


If it is not, using a long flat blade screwdriver, rotate the oil pump driveshaft clockwise until the slot lines up with the number one intake manifold bolt hole. Reinstall the distributor and snug the half inch bolt down. The rotor should be pointing towards the number one cylinder mark on the distributor plate. Reinstall the distributor cap and try to fire the motor over.

Need to know how to install a new distributor and the firing order for a 4 cyl

Firing order is 1342. #1 cylinder is closest to front. (By pulleys)

Engine Not Rotated
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Turn the engine over until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke.
  3. Remove the distributor cap. Remove the wire harness connected to the side of the distributor.
  4. Mark the position of the distributor base in relation to the engine block with white paint or other suitable marking material, for reference when reinstalling the distributor.
  5. Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp.
  6. Carefully begin lifting the distributor up and out. Once the shaft is clear of the engine compartment, inspect the shaft for cracks in the O-seal, the condition of the shaft drive gear and any other part which could lead to distributor problems in the future.

To install:
  1. Check to make sure the engine is still at TDC. Inspect distributor shaft hole to make sure it is free of dirt.
  2. Rotate distributor shaft until the painted mark on rotor is pointing toward painted mark on engine block made during removal.
  3. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane the switch stator assembly.
  4. Dip entire distributor gear in engine assembly lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent.

If installing a new distributor, ALWAYS add engine assembly lubricant to the engine oil by pouring it through distributor hole onto the camshaft gear. Run engine at idle for at least five minutes before driving.
  1. Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
  1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
  2. Install the distributor cap and, tighten screws to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).
  3. Reconnect battery cable. Start vehicle, and check timing. If timing needs adjustment, refer to the Ignition Timing section.
  4. After timing has been set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 17-2 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).

Engine Rotated with Distributor Removed
  1. If the crankshaft was rotated while the distributor was removed, the engine must be brought to TDC on the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder.
  2. Remove the No. 1 spark plug. Place a finger over the hole and rotate the crankshaft slowly in the direction of normal rotation until engine compression is felt.
  3. When engine compression is felt at the spark plug hole, indicating that the piston is approaching TDC, continue to turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the pulley is aligned with the 0 mark on the engine front cover.
  4. Turn the distributor shaft until the ignition rotor is at the No. 1 firing position.
  5. Rotate distributor shaft so the blade on rotor is pointing toward paint mark on distributor base made during removal.
  6. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
  1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
  2. Install the rotor and distributor cap and connect all wiring. Tighten distributor cap to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).
  3. Reconnect battery cable. Start vehicle, and check timing. If timing needs adjustment, refer to the Ignition Timing section.
  4. After timing has been set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 17-2 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).

Can't set the timing on 85 2.5 litre Fiero. The car was cranked after distrubutor removed

You need to get the crankshaft into the number one cylinder top-dead-center compression (both valves closed) position. The crankshaft goes around twice as fast (twice as many times) as the camshaft and the camshaft turns the distributor. You need to turn the crank with a wrench. Loosen #1 spark plug, take the others out. Watch the timing marks on the front pulley. One time it will come up and not be on compression stroke. Another time you will hear air hiss out around the spark plug. This is the compression stroke. They alternate, compression - exhaust- compression - exhaust. Stop at 0 on the front pulley timing marks when it hisses. Now the rotor in the distributor needs to be pointing to number one spark plug wire. If the oil pump is driven by the bottom end of the distributor, most are, the drive needs to be aligned so they will mesh together. Now comes the tricky part, because of the shape of the distributor drive gears the distributor rotates as the gears mesh. Set the rotor where it needs to be, drop in into the hole and watch which way it turns and how much. Pull the distributor back up and adjust the rotor the opposite way that amount to compensate. Now drop it in again. Now it should be where you want it to be. The oil pump drive probably isn't meshed. Crank the engine around by hand while pressing down gently on the distributor. The distributor will drop the rest of the way in when the oil pump drive aligns with the distributor. Now crank the engine around again and verify that the rotor is in the right place when the crank comes up on TDC compression. If it isn't pull the distrib. up and adjust and repeat the steps to mesh the oil pump drive. Once you get it where you want it, put the hold down on, the cap on and try it out. If you can't turn it far enough to get the timing where it needs to be adjust the gear mesh again.

  1. After engine ignition timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt on to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial engine ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
