Question about 2002 Ford Explorer
The problem with the gas gauge is due to a failed part called the "Fuel level sending unit". The fuel level sending unit is located inside the gas tank and is part of a Modular assembly called the fuel pump assembly the fuel level sending unit is not sold separately, it comes as all one piece, see photo below. The reason the miles to empty works is that this is calculated by the engine control computer from various sensors on the engine, and it doesn't use the fuel level sender as one of the inputs to calculate the miles to empty figure. To replace the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank requires that the fuel tank be removed from the truck.
How To Replace a 2002 Ford Explorer Fuel Pump Module. Remember you are working with very flammable gasoline, be careful!
Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Position your vehicle on a hoist and place it in neutral. Release the fuel system pressure and drain the tank. Remove the fuel tank skid plates with a socket wrench and use a Hydraulic Floor jack to support the fuel tank. Loosen the bolts that retain the fuel tank support straps with a socket wrench, slowly drop the fuel tank down and disconnect the electrical connectors and then the fuel lines (you will need a special fuel line spring release tool) also disconnect the vapor tube fittings.
Release the fuel pump retaining lock ring by carefully rotating it using the fuel pump locking ring tool. Remove the lock ring first followed by the fuel pump. Use care to avoid damaging the fuel filter and float arm. Discard the old O-ring seal.
Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the new O-ring seal.
Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
This is the fuel pump module that also contains the fuel level sensor that feeds the signal to the fuel gauge.
