2002 Toyota Highlander Cruise Control problems

My cruise control is not working on the 2002 Toyota Highlander. I had a mechanic check it out and he couldn't find anything wrong with it that was obvious. I hear that the parts will cost me $1400, plus labor from the dealer. I'd like to do something more cost effective. Any suggestions on what I should do? Is there some digital code that would have to be re-set if I were to get the part from a pick-and-pull salvage yard?

2001 Toyota Highlander 3.0L 4wd When cold cruise works for aprox 1/2-1 Hr then cuts out, and won't reset. I've taken it to Toyota where they analyised it and said it was the switch or the controller. ...

I have a suggestion. Pull the fuel pump relay out, then wire a 10 amp DC ammeter in series with the fuel pump, using the connections that used to be through the fuel pump. Start the engine, and watch the fuel pump current. Does the current level fall off, indicating the fuel pump is losing pressure, and therefore failing.

The cruise control doesn't work but the light cruise is on in the panel and the actuator have been change. The fuse is also looking good but i'm wondering if any relay or other switch could be in cause?...

Cruise controls use Vacuum from the inlet manifold to operate the throttle linkage for cruising. If the hose that supplies the vacuum is not tight on the connections at either end, due to getting hard and/or splitting, the unit will not have enough vacuum to operate the linkage. Check the hose that supplies the cruise control, as well as all the hoses used for pollution control in the engine bay for poor connections. They should be tight, not hard or split and not be able to be removed easily.

I want to do a tune up on my toyota highlander myself what do i need?

With electronic ignition sytems today there are no moving parts in the top of the ignition module. Spark plugs and an Air filter is about all you can do for a tune up at home. There is no need to do any timing adjustments.

However..... if you have not changed the timing belt on an 8 year old vehicle it is time to have that done. A worn or loose timing belt can cause your vehicle to idle slower or not maintain an even speed when using a cruise control system or (cruise off) driving a contsant speed and the car seems to cycle up and down in speed a little bit.

Thanks for using FixYa.

if the lights on the dash come on when you hit the button it is working elecrically check the main unit under the hood should have a cable from it to the throttle body make sure this is connected and the cruise is plugged up under the hood. before taking to dealer

Cruise control problem

There are 3 places on the Rav4 where fuses can be located and checked. for the cuise control.

The back of the cruise control stacking switch has been know to fail (fall apart) and Toyota issued a TSB with replacement switch.

if it is the fuses then they most likely are related to cruise control system: Stop, Dome, Gauge and Igniton
The interior fuse box
The main engine fuse box (by brake fluid)
Cruise control ECU is under the glovebox.
Cruise control actuator is under hood (by driver side brake fluid/booster)Throttle position sensor (to detect if your foot is on gas pedal)
Cruise control switch on the clutch pedal too (if you have 5spd manual)
Brake lights are the deactivate signal for the cruise control
