You could benefit from a tow package upgrade including a tranny cooler if you don't already have one. You might want to pressure test the radiator, those things aren't immortal, and depending on where you live and how you drive, 10 years on a radiator is pretty good. seriously, pressure test the cooling system and go from there.

Radiator cooling fans stopped working 1998 ford contour 2.5 liter

some of you might be familiar with me as i asked a couple questions about this particular car's transmission last week. its a 1998 ford contour GL. equipped with a 2.0 liter zetec 16 valve 4 cylinder and a 4 speed automatic transmission. i bought the car last week to fix it and sell it. so, today i finished giving it a mild tune up. ive changed the oil and filter, transmission fluid, fuel filter, air filter, added lucas transmission stop slip, and fuel injector cleaner. so, after finishing up the transmission fluid change, i let the car idle for about 10 minutes until it got up to its normal operating temperature. then it started to overheat, then its temperature went back down into the normal range, but yet it was too close to the hot range for comfort. i turned the heater all the way on and it didnt make too much of a dramatic difference. as i looked over the engine compartment, and felt the upper radiator hose to see if the thermostat had opened up fully, i noticed that the electric radiator cooling fans werent on at all. so, im assuming that thats what the problem is. my question for you is: besides checking the fuses, what else is there to look for to see why the car's cooling fans arent kicking on? im still really unfamiliar with fords late model cars. im pretty fed up with this one already. thanks for your input.

Are you sure that the spring side of the thermostat is toured the engine/ look for a bleeder near the top highest spot in a line or hose that may be able to release the air it may even be near the water pump side.on some water pumps for the ford's the pumps will bolt on and look almost the same but the fins on the impeller are the opposite.clock wise instead of counter clock wise or vice vars. you my wont to check with your parts supply store to see if that is possible.hope this helps give you some ideas.feel free to ask again if you would like any further assistance.thank you for asking fixya . I just purchaced a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 and was wondering if it is normal for the cooling fan to rev high. you can hear it roar when you start out but when it shifts gears it quiets down. i also noticed...

Is normal for older vehicles to do this. Wait until something breaks and fix it. I know it doesnt sound like great advice, but if all is working, leave it alone.

Ford ranger truck overheating

I have had this happen with my ranger. Changed everything I could to try to fix the over heating. It turned out that I had a small leak in my head gasket and it was allowing exsaust gas to go into the cooling system witch was over pressurizing it. Also the air from the exsaust will heat up much faster than liquid making your thermostat to read hot and will not be able to blow hot air in the cab because there is no liquid going to the heater core. This happened to me when my blet came off and I tryed to make it home. If you had it over heat for a long peirod of time it may have ripped the head gasket.

if running hot at idle could be water pump not circulating enough try revving engine some and see if temp comes down. also check your fan clutch.

You probably have airlock in the cooling system.

Not sure about the 4 runner's cooling system, but if there is airlock I usually take the coolant back out, take the thermostat back out, fill the engine block from this hole with 50/50 coolant, reinstall the thermostat, upper hose, fill the radiator and tank, then run the vehicle with the heater on max (rad cap off) and then fill the rad as the rest of the air comes out.
