Question about 2004 Ford F150

1 Answer

Ok here is a weird one, my truck has power, I put the key in, and I have no chip in my key by the way, I turn the truck on it goes through the motions, when I hit the start position all it does is goes "click" and then my readout says check gauges and my security light comes on almost solid red and the truck will not start. Sometimes it will start, sometimes it will not, it has also just quit running once but when I stopped and restarted it fired right back up and ran. Any help with this??

I have seen this before. And I would almost bet your Battery Voltage at the starter will be 6 Volts or below 9 Volts. It is a combination of several things. There are some TSB solutions for electric problems but you need to get a code from a scanner. Autozone, Oreillys and Advance will scan for free. But your particular problem may not set a "check Light"

If your Battery is not fully charged, which would be 13.2-13.6 Volts, you can have problems from the Antitheft system. When activated the Antitheft system drops the Voltage to a level the starter will not work with, to prevent theft. Have your Battery draw tested and if replaced, only put in a fully charged battery.

Another thing that can happen is intermittent charging. Even with a jumper vehicle, your truck will start and within 3 minutes of having the boost removed your own truck will fail to charge. People have stalled their trucks at 70MPH or after driving for hours they have a dead battery. The dash Voltmeter will indicate a discharge but most people do not look at the gauges.

I suspect if there is a Battery Saver system in the truck, it is that system which may be breaking the power connection to save power from the drain. Unfortunately the drain is the engine running or the starter trying to work. So I suspect the Battery Saver can be a part of the starting problem too!

I hope my solution is very helpful to you. You need further testing to sort this out. I would like to know what you find out to fix this problem.

How do i disable or bypass the anti theft system?

You can't. It is there in place to stop exactly what you are trying to do.

There is a chip in the key and a chip in the ignition lock. They are paired. The cars computer interrogates the two chips and if both are there the computer connects power to the ignition circuit and starter when you turn the key. No paired chips, no power.

To defeat it, you could rewire the ignition, but how would you convince the computer that all was ok.

Does honda civic lx 2002 have a chip in the key? the black part of my key got broke but the key will turn the car on but wont actually start it

Yes, it contains a transponder chip. If you still have the fob part with the chip in tape it to the plastic close to where you put the key in. Honda used a proximity transponder so as long as it is near by it will read it ok.

My security light is blinking and my car wont even attempt to turn over. whats wrong?

It sounds like you have a chip style key. Most GM dealers can make you one if you bring them the cars VIN number and paperwork showing you own the car. Key can be expensive, Ford keys $100 each, GM usually $50. Not fun for just a stupid key. Some hardware stores like the Ace chain now have a display at their "key" counter that you put your key in a slot and if it lights up it means it can see it is a chip key. If the key is totally dead the dealer is the only help, if Ace can read it still they are cheaper. If your key is the black - fairly thick type key it is probably a chip key.
