Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

97 Toyota camry

I put diesel accidentally in the fuel tank (aprox 3 gal). When I noticed I filled the tank with gas. The car kept running but, on idle was at 1500 rpms. Once the tank of gas in the finished the car didn’t want to start.
We have checked the computer and are is ok. The spark plugs are receiving electricity. The fuel pump in the gas tank seems to be pumping fine. But it looks like the injectors are not receiving fuel.
Could it be one of the sensors?

Check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail on top of the motor. Diesel fuel tends to be "dirtier" than gasoline, and I'd be willing to bet the fuel filter is stopped up.

I accidentally put 2 gallons of diesel fuel into my 2005 Toyota Camry while it was on Empty and I drove it home.Any help or suggestions anyone??

Get someone to draw out the contents of the fuel tank then refill with gas. Should be fine. Do not run the car anymore until you do. It could very well destroy the engine.

Basically do NOT drive the car and have the gas tank drained or talk to a mechanic.

Accidentally putting diesel in a gas car If you know that you have accidentally put the wrong fuel in the car, then don't compound the mistake by driving the vehicle while trying to think about what to do. Instead, call your mechanic immediately. At this point, the damage isn't permanent. If you drive and continue to drive, at one point the vehicle will stop and you will still have to have it towed.

There are two things you can do to try to fix the damage:
1. Try to clean up the damage yourself - have the vehicle towed home if it's not there already, and get as much of the diesel fuel out. How? By siphon if you can or any other method that you have available. Once you have as much of the diesel out as you can, fill the tank with the correct unleaded fuel that you normally use. Try to start the vehicle. It could take several attempts but it will start and it will smoke - a lot. It will continue to smoke until the last dregs of the diesel make its way through the system. It might run a little rough until everything is cleaned out. How it runs will depend on the proportion of diesel fuel relative to gas left in the tank.

2. Alternatively, have your vehicle towed to where your mechanic is and have the fuel tank drained of all the diesel fuel by a profession. They are also likely to flush out the whole fuel system. If the diesel stays in there for too long (and who knows how long is too long for your particular vehicle), it could ruin the fuel pump, lines and injectors. It is also possible that the diesel could have gummed up the spark plugs and filters. If this is the case, they will probably need to be replaced. Getting a professional to do the job will cost you anywhere from $100 to $500 and possibly a little higher depending on the extent of the damage.

I accidentaly put diesel fuel into my 2000 Acura 3.5 RL, the tank is 18 gallons, it was at about 2 gallons when I filled the tank with 4 gallons of diesel, I got the car towed back to my house, what steps,...

Very easy! Get a siphon and get all of the fuel out through the fill hole. Then put 5-10 gallons of good fuel with a can of Seafoam this will help to dilute any remaining diesel that is left. Start and let idle for at least 10 minutes. It may run rough for a little bit but will clear up and you will be ok! Good Luck!

2000 Camry Gas tank spits gas out 2-3 times before taking it

there is a vent pipe that runs along side the fill pipe, this allows the air to vent out of the tank as u fill, check it for obstrutions or a kink, u will need to remove it to check this out.

Fuel Economy has dropped dramatically

CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER!!!! INSTALL A PUEROLATOR OR FRAM AIR FILTER FOR THE MODEL YEAR OF YOUR CAR. I DID THAT FOR MY 2007 CAMRY AND I PROBABLY PICKED UP 3-4 MPGS. THE TOYOTA FILTER MIGHT BE TOO RESTRICTIVE!!!

No.
Unfortunately diesel leaves a residue in the lines and on the injectors.
There is only one cure for this, take out the injectors and get them serviced and flush all the fuel lines out with clean gasoline.
