Question about 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country

1 Answer

I have a 1993 cherokee sport with a 4.0 ho motor in it. This jeep runs great but when it gets warmed up good it starts to burn oil??? It has about 140k on the odo and just started doing this. I pulled the spark plugs and I think that the plugs are not the right plugs. They are champion RC12LYC and they appear to have been overheated. I bought this jeep last year and don't have alot of history on it. I have been real happy with it until the smoking issue surfaced. Any advice would be appreciated.

Plugs are the right ones, (gap at .035 ) Lets start with the simple things first, such as , have you changed grade, and/or brand of oil by chance? Have you checked and/or replaced PCV valve and any filters ? Does it puff smoke all the time, or only when stopping quick and taking off quick? Is engine running at normal temperature, or is it running a little hotter since this started?
If all these check out good, perhaps a wet/dry compression test at this stage would be a good idea.

I did check on the pcv valve and everyone tells me that the jeep 4.0 doesn't require one(odd to me), and I cannot find one on the jeep. I have not noticed it ever running hot, and I always keep an eye on my guages. It will lightly burn oil after warming up good moving or sitting still.
I picked up a compression test kit at lunch today and will test the compression tonight. Also I had injector probs on another jeep a couple of years ago, I think that I'll check all of the injectors after I run the compression test.

Depending on results of wet/dry, compression test, you may want to think about possible valve seals and/or guides if compression is good. No idea whether the vehicle may have sat (not running) for any length of time do you? (dries up the seals) When you say plugs look overheated, there was no sign of oil fouling I take it?

I performed the compression test last night and the dry test showed compression levels of 120 to 130, the wet test showed 130 to 150. I did a complete engine flush with quicksilver power tune and a small amount of ATF and changed the oil and oil filter after about a 20 mile ride. I had a mechanic that I am good friends with suggest running 30 weight rotella heavy duty oil (for turbo & non turbo motors). After the fluid change my oil pressure was much higher at idle and driving speeds(20+lbs). I will put a few hundred miles on this fluid change and repeat. He claims that the rotella is very good for high mile motors because of the detergents that are blended into for diesel motors. I think that your diagnosis is probably dead on about the valve guides or seals, but after the engine flush with the powertune and the ATF the smoking seemed to least for now. Thanks for your help!

That's one of the reasons I asked if maybe oil grade or brand had been changed by chance. I sold a vehicle once to a relative and after they changed the oil, it started using oil like crazy, about I -2 liters every 100-150 miles, and it never used any more than 1/4liter between changes when I owned it. Finally I convinced them to go back to brand I was using and consumption went back to normal. And they try to convince you that all oils are pretty well the same. Good Luck, let me know how it turns out.

Is there a troubleshooting manual for a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4 Wheel Drive. 4.0 or do I need to look in a manual? I have an oil leak by the oil filter and can't find where its coming from.

try going to car wash and use the degreaser spray. clean up under the car real well in that area, and under the hood. spray it all off good and watch to see where the oil leaks from.

Are a 1993 4.0 liter high output 2 wheel drive Jeep Grand Cherokee countries have the same block as a 1990 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4 wheel drive it also has the 4.0 liter engine but it is not the high...

the first grand cherokee laredo was in 1992 . it was all jeep sports back then, the blocks are all the same .you will need to use some of the sensors from the old motor, the distributor and oil sending unit and temp sensor. will be no problem. if I can put a ford ranger motor in a mercury sable your swap is easier

The electric windows on 1993 Jeep Grand don't work.

You would have to take the door panel off to take the window motor off, then run jumper wires to the window motor terminals. If the motor doesn't turn, time to get a new one. But more than likely, if all the windows don't work, it may possibly be a fuse. Also, you might want to check the window switches, they do burn out. I have had to replace a couple on my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
